At first blush, the Chicago Bears appeared to come out of their preseason opener unscathed in terms of injuries. Unfortunately, that wasn’t entirely true. And now, we are on injury watch between now and when the team kicks off next Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals in its second exhibition game.
Some injury notes from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s post-game press conference:

Let’s Keep An Eye On Bears Safety Xavier Woods’ Injury Status
The Xavier Woods groin injury is one to keep an eye on in the coming days. Woods signed with the Bears eight days ago, so the team could be playing it cautiously with their newest defensive back. With starter Coby Bryant out until December (at least) and injuries popping up elsewhere in the secondary, I can see why the team would want to play it safe here. Hopefully, that’s all this is, and Woods can get up to speed with his new teammates on the practice field.

However, if there is more to this injury issue, then my concern levels will be heightened. A defensive backfield already dealing with injuries to Bryant and Kyler Gordon can’t afford to be missing more guys. I’m sure General Manager Ryan Poles and Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen could pull some familiar faces off the street to be place-holders. But the last thing any of us wants is a secondary full of filler. That is just asking for trouble.

Mandatory Credit: Mike Dinovo-Imagn ImagesIf you’re wondering about Kyler Gordon’s status, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson said it was “unknown” and left it at that. I’m not sure what the team’s plans are for Gordon, but it sure sounds like this team is preparing to play without him until further notice.
The other player whose injury status I want to monitor is Jedrick Wills Jr., who appeared in relief of Kiran Amegadjie in the second quarter at left tackle. However, Wills’ time on the field was cut short as Amegadjie returned to the game late in the second quarter to run with the offense during the two-minute drill. Wills has a lengthy injury history, and I’m not sure if something flared up for the 2020 first-round pick. For what it’s worth, the Bears signed offensive lineman Wesley French on Aug. 11. Perhaps that addition could be valuable if Wills is dealing with a serious injury.
