Blackhawks Head Coach Jeff Blashill Talks About Connor Bedard’s Injury (Sort Of)

Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill talked roughly seven hours before the Blackhawks host the Red Wings on Saturday. That isn’t a normal timeline for a head coach talking on the second day of a back-to-back with travel between games and no morning skate; usually the coach will talk a couple hours before the game starts.

Obviously, the circumstances were slightly different for the Blackhawks head coach on Saturday. His best player, Connor Bedard, suffered an injury inside the final second (singular) of regulation and will not play against the Detroit Red Wings in Chicago on Saturday night. Nick Lardis will make his NHL debut, getting the call from Rockford with Bedard not available.

Did Blashill have a significant update on Bedard’s status when he spoke to the four of us who made the drive in around lunchtime? Not really.

“I don’t have any update,” Blashill said. “I knew I wasn’t going to yesterday. He’s undergoing further evaluation, so we’ll know more in the next couple of days. I just don’t want to say stuff that’s not super accurate”

When asked about the role the perceived check/shove from Blues captain Brayden Schenn played in injuring Bedard, Blashill actually said a couple interesting things.

“First of all, Brayden Schenn’s a really good hockey player,” Blashill said. “He’s not trying to do damage to him there. He literally, Connor gets injured before any push happens, to be honest with you. So it really had no bearing on the play. It’s super unfortunate. Point 8 seconds left, we didn’t foresee that happening.”

The part about Bedard getting hurt before the contact from Schenn was interesting.

The other thing Blashill said that was subtle but got my attention was part of his response when asked about Lardis being called up.

“I know for sure Connor’s not playing tonight, so we just felt it gives us another potential offensive guy that can come in and provide some scoring punch.”

When Nick Foligno got hurt, Blashill was pretty confident/comfortable telling us pretty quickly that it was probably a four-week injury and not of the eight-week variety. Him limiting his comment here to “Connor’s not playing tonight” gave me at least a little hope that maybe this isn’t necessarily a longer term (days, not weeks) situation.
