The Winter Meetings are over, but there are so many free agents unsigned and trades unconsummated that I think this is how it’s going to be, particularly for the next couple weeks. A drip, drip of transactions.
Tonight’s is outfielder Mike Yastrzemski, a late bloomer who has hit .238/.324/.447/111 wRC+ in the big leagues (and pretty close to that the last two years), signing a multi-year deal with the Atlanta Braves.
Mike Yastrzemski agrees to Braves deal. 2 years, plus option $23M.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) December 11, 2025The catches on Yastrzemski are (1) he’s virtually unplayable against fellow lefties, and (2) he’s 35. But if the age cliff doesn’t come on too harshly and you use him mostly against righties, he figures to be a pretty useful 3rd/4th outfielder. Hence the relatively sizable payday.
Throw in the fact that the outfield market is pretty rough overall this year, and guys like Yastrzemski are bound to be paid well. Glad the Cubs aren’t in that market this time around (and kinda wish they had more flexible outfield pieces to be able to trade).
