A northwest suburban gas station canopy collapsed amid the most recent round of snow this week, officials said.
The Marathon gas station at 8 E. Main St. in Cary collapsed Sunday, just as the latest round of accumulating snow hit the Chicago area in what has been a nearly historic start to winter.
Village Administrator Erik Morimoto said no injuries were reported in the collapse and all fuel dispensing systems were shut off immediately and will remain shut off until demolition is complete. The convenience store remains open while repairs are being coordinated, Morimoto said.
According to the village, the canopy had previously been damaged during a summer storm that sparked an emergency declaration in the far northwest Chicago suburb. The storm damaged buildings across Cary and sparked dozens of service calls for first responders.
The canopy was among the structures damaged in the storm, though the insurance provider’s structural engineer deemed it “stable” at the time. The city’s Community Development Department still had the owner cordon off the area and create a “safety perimeter” around the canopy, which remained in place prior to Sunday’s collapse.
So far, 17.1 inches of snow has been recorded in Chicago as of Dec. 7. During the entire 2024-25 winter season just 17.6 inches of snow fell in the area.
It marks the snowiest start to winter since 1978, according to NWS.
