FORT COLLINS — Sometimes when you have two teams that are as evenly matched as top-seeded Windsor and second-seeded Pomona, an x-factor makes all the difference.
With the Class 3A state football championship game tied with just three seconds left, the Panthers revealed their x-factor.
And, that x-factor, junior kicker Chase Keaton, seemingly painted his own “X” right in between the uprights of the south goalposts at Canvas Stadium on the Colorado State University campus Saturday.

(Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)Keaton’s picture-perfect 40-yard field goal as time expired gave Pomona a dramatic 17-14 victory and the third state football title in its school’s history.
“Low key, I was really scared,” Keaton said, moments after his team was awarded the championship trophy. “I knew everyone was with me. Everyone was going to breathe with me. And, even if I didn’t make it, I knew my team had the hands to handle it in overtime.”
This was the first football title at the 3A level for the Panthers (13-1). Their previous titles came in 4A (1988) and 5A (2017).
Windsor head coach Chris Jones shares a moment with senior Matyas Velgersdyk (53) after Windsor's loss to Pomona in the 3A football state championship game at Canvas Stadium on the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025. (Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)Windsor (13-1) was denied an undefeated season and what would have been its fifth state football title in school history. This was the Wizards’ first title game appearance since winning the 4A crown in 2015.
For most of the 48 minutes Saturday, Windsor was just as well-positioned for a win as was Pomona.
However, after the Wizards seemingly seized momentum early in the second half — with a six-play, 39-yard game-tying drive after a 40-yard Grady Sullivan kick return — Pomona’s defense completely clamped down on Windsor’s normally unflappable run game.

(Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)“There was a couple times that we pulled (the ball) and they just timed it right,” the Wizards’ decorated head coach Chris Jones said. “That might have been their scheme, ‘If that guy pulls, you’re going.’ And they hit us with a couple of losses. And, then we had a couple false starts where instead of it being first-and-10, it was first-and-15.”
Aside from Keaton’s clutch kick, the Panthers can largely thank one other monumental play for their championship victory.
With 1 minute, 9 seconds left before halftime, Pomona broke a 7-7 tie with a timely, tricky halfback pass in which senior running back Luis Santana was handed the ball in the Panthers’ backfield.

(Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)Rather than trying to cut up field and search for wiggle room against Windsor’s swarming defense, Santana looked up to find Panthers junior quarterback Tucker Ingersoll streaking down the right sideline.
The pass sailed about 30 yards through the air before it caromed off the finger tips of a Wizards defensive back right into the waiting arms of Ingersoll. Ingersoll ran the ball about 20 more yards into the end zone.
That play put Pomona up 14-7 and would haunt Windsor the rest of the game, as the Wizards could never again regain the lead.

(Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)“Two big plays,” Jones said. “It’s a very emotional game, and it’s a very physical game. Our kids put in a ton of work. They have nothing to hang their heads for. We have a quality group of guys who came to work for four years, and we’re still going to be family forever.”
This was Keaton’s first year kicking for Pomona.
He has played soccer since he was 3 years old.

(Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)After the Panthers lost to Mead, 21-19, in the semifinals a year ago — after beating Windsor 27-23 in the quarterfinals — Pomona coach Nathan Johnson was persistent in trying to convince Keaton to kick for the football team.
Johnson and the entire Panthers squad are likely glad that Keaton ultimately gave in to Johnson’s persuasion.
Keaton is plenty glad he did, as well.

(Brice Tucker/Staff Photographer)“I’ve been practicing for this for about a year-and-a-half now,” Keaton said. “This is my first year of kicking. It’s all amazing. It’s a new experience, for sure. But, I trusted my holder, trusted myself and trusted God. … I knew this kick was going to be all good.”
While many of the hundreds and hundreds of Wizards fans that made the short drive to Canvas Stadium couldn’t bare to watch as Keaton’s kick sailed perfectly through the uprights, Jones — known for his deep thinking — looked on intently.
“It was a great kick,” Jones said. “Some people put their heads down (during the kick). Well, I was going to watch it and go through those emotions. When it happened with no time left, I was like, ‘OK. That’s it.’ But it doesn’t end with these (Windsor) guys. I’m rolling with these guys for the rest of their lives.”
