The Chicago Bears turned heads by opening the 21-day practice window for cornerback Jaylon Johnson to return from injured reserve. And they certainly grabbed my attention by listing him as questionable to play in the team’s Week 11 game against the Minnesota Vikings on Friday’s injury report. One day later, Johnson was downgraded to out and remained on injured reserve.
To be clear, I wasn’t expecting Jaylon Johnson to play after just one practice. But that Johnson was listed as a limited participant in practice suggested that his return could come sooner than expected. And while there is a part of me that expects the Bears to exhaust the full 21-day practice window to ensure Jaylon is fully ready to get back into the swing of things for the stretch run, I am on high alert for updates this week — especially after what FOX broadcaster Kevin Burkhardt said during last week’s Bears-Vikings game. I’m glad I jotted this down and put it on Twitter when I heard it on the broadcast:
FOX broadcaster Kevin Burkhardt mentioning that #DaBears hope to have Jaylon Johnson back “in the next week or two” is an interesting development.

I feel as if the main point of having a 21-day practice window for players returning from injured reserve is to make sure that (1) players don’t rush themselves back fron injury and (2) that teams don’t rush key players back from injury. We’ve already seen what happens when Jaylon Johnson tries to hop back into the action before he is ready. Remember, Johnson aggravated a calf injury while building up for the Bears’ early-season schedule. He sat in Week 1 against the Vikings, then left after just 20 snaps in Week 2 against the Lions. Repeating history here would not be a good thing.
With that being said, FOX broadcaster Kevin Burkhardt mentioning that the team hopes to have Jaylon Johnson back “in the next week or two” is an interesting development. It hints at the possibility that Johnson will not need the full 21-day practice window to return from injured reserve. In my heart of hearts, I’d rather Johnson take the full 21 days and be a full go when the Bears face the Green Bay Packers in Week 14. There would be something poetic about Johnson’s return coming at Lambeau Field when he was last seen flipping the one-finger salute to Packers fans in a game the Bears ultimately won.

Then again, I am open to Jaylon Johnson re-entering the Bears lineup in Week 12 against the Steelers and long-time nemesis Aaron Rodgers (should he be cleared to play) or on Black Friday in Week 13 against a Philadelphia Eagles offense featuring A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. But if we absolutely, positively have to wait it out until Week 14 against the Packers, then so be it. What matters most here is that the bears get Johnson back as healthy as possible. Jaylon’s health is of the utmost importance. Full stop.
In the end, I look forward to the return of Jaylon Johnson. Getting a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback could open things up for Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen. A secondary with a healthy Jaylon Johnson joining a pesky C.J. Gardner-Johnson, a Pro Bowl-caliber safety in Kevin Byard III, and a solid Jaquan Brisker could level up Chicago’s defense. So, in other words, there is no good reason to rush this thing.
