The #7 ranked recruit in the girls high school class of 2028 Shelby Hutchinson has announced her commitment to continue her academic and athletic careers at Virginia beginning in fall 2028. She is the first top 20 commitment for the class of 2028 to any program.

Hutchinson swims for South Jersey Aquatic Club and is from Haddon Township, NJ. She finished her long course season at U.S. Nationals where she saw her highest finish come in the 200 back as she swam a season best 2:15.43. She swam a lifetime best in the 50 fly with a 27.81 in prelims.
She is currently a junior at Haddon Township High School and swam to numerous wins at the 2026 NJISAA Meet of Champions back in February. There she won the 100 back in a 51.87 and the 100 fly in a 52.26. Both swims were lifetime best times. Her swim in the 100 back was a huge lifetime best as she entered the meet with a lifetime best 53.11 she swam in December 2025 at Winter Juniors.

100 back: 51.87 200 back: 1:55.49 100 fly: 52.26 50 free: 22.63 100 free: 49.51The Virginia women captured the 2026 ACC and NCAA team titles. This marked their 6th NCAA title in a row. They were led by Claire Curzan who scored 57 individual points at NCAAs, including wins in the 100 back (48.24) and 200 back (1:46.10). The Cavaliers are currently ranked #1 in SwimSwam’s pre-season power rankings for the 2026-2027 season.
Based on her best times, Hutchinson is just off what it took to earn an NCAA invite this past season as it took a 51.54 100 back and a 51.99 100 fly. Virginia had 18 invited swimmers this past season, sitting right at the NCAA cap. Hutchinson’s lifetime bests would already score at the conference level as her 100 back and 100 fly would have made the ACC ‘B’ final.
Hutchinson is the first publicly announced commitment for Virginia with the girls high school class of 2028, but Instagram posts today indicate the program has received numerous commitments on the women’s side already.
