Bears fans had been waiting all year for the best version of return specialist Devin Duvernay to show up.
Thankfully, when the team needed him the most, Duvernay came up with his best return of the year. This 57-yard scamper set up what would turn out to be the Cairo Santos game-winning field goal as time expired. We’ve spilled a fair share of virtual ink about Santos’ kick, so let’s take a moment to revisit Devin Duvernay’s great kick return:

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) November 16, 2025The end result is amazing. But I can’t stop watching this video without picking up something new. A block here, by Josh Blackwell, a burst of speed there fron Devin Duvernay, and then there is nothing but green in front of him for just enough time to get the Bears into field goal range. I love how Duvernay runs with authority in this return. There is no wasted movement. There are no unnecessary stutter steps. Everyone on the Bears special teams unit does their job to the highest degree on this return. And they did it without committing a penalty. What a wonderfully unexpected moment of joy that kickoff return turned out to be for the Bears and their fans.

So … what goes into a return like that? Well, let’s let Duvernay tell it (via the Bears’ official website):
Duvernay believes the special teams’ clutch response in the final minute starts with Hightower’s consistent messaging and the players’ resiliency through all four quarters.
“The game’s not over till 0:00 on the clock,” Duvernay said. “We’ve just got to keep playing the game, keep playing, and we know our plays will come … [It’s] just staying with it, just knowing we impact games. We’re not just there just to be there. We really impact games and hopefully win the game for the team. HT just preaches staying with it, that we can help this team win and preaches impact.”
Things haven’t gone well for the Bears special teams for chunks of this season. There is a lot to clean up in terms of penalties, concentration, and execution. But for whatever it’s worth, we got a glimpse of what it is supposed to look like when everything is clicking — both with the Devin Duvernay return and the successful Cairo Santos field goal make to win the game. Where can I get more of that action from the Bears?
BEARS WIN! Recap and Highlights | Cairo on His Big Kick | Player Grades | Good, Better, Best
I can’t stop thinking about how this is not the first time that Bears Special Teams Coordinator Richard Hightower has saved his best for last. If you’ll recall, Hightower went deep into his bag of tricks in Week 18 with a special teams punt return play that went for a touchdown in the team’s Week 18 win against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Between the trickeration and team’s overall special teams grade, I understood why Bears Head Coch Ben Johnson retained Hightower for another season. Unfortunately, this year’s special teams unit has been unable to recreate the magic last year’s group had. And it makes me wonder if Richard Hightower could be coaching for his job.
The Bears still have seven games to go in this season. And unless something drastic happens, I don’t think the special teams coordinator will be shown the boot. However, players like Devin Duvernay still need to produce. Because after seeing Josh Blackwell and Roschon Johnson return kicks on Sunday, it is possible that Duvernay could be playing for his job down the stretch. In any case, the whole special teams experience is worth monitoring down the stretch — for better or worse.
