The Chicago Bulls will be without their starting point guard for the second straight game.
With a little over an hour before game time, the team downgraded Josh Giddey to OUT with an ankle sprain. He first suffered the injury in the Bulls’ meeting with the Cleveland Cavaliers. While he was able to return to the game and finish things out, the team proceeded to sit him out for Monday’s loss against the San Antonio Spurs.
The Bulls were able to keep things tight in Giddey’s absence, but Victor Wembanyama and Company put together a strong fourth quarter to close things out. The Bulls struggled heavily to create offense down the stretch, shooting a mere 7-25 in the fourth quarter overall. Giddey was also a major part of Chicago’s opening night win over the Pistons on Oct. 23. He finished as a +6 with 19 points, 11 assists, and 5 rebounds. While he struggled from the field to the tune of a 5-12 shooting night, the jumbo guard’s ability to get to the charity stripe proved pivotal (8-11).
Nevertheless, the good news for the Bulls is that they will have a full three-day break before Sunday night’s meeting with the Jazz. This will mean Giddey has been resting up for a week, which will hopefully open up the door for his return.
The Bulls are also surely happy to see that they are not the only banged-up squad coming into their second game against the Pistons. Detroit has a lengthy injury report of its own. Superstar guard Cade Cunningham is questionable with a hip injury, while dominant big man Jalen Duren is questionable with an ankle sprain. Meanwhile, multiple role players have already been ruled out, including Ausar Thomspon, Tobias Harris, and Jaden Ivey.
Regardless, if Cunningham and Duren can get the green light, this will be an uphill battle for the Bulls. Those two have been the backbone of the Pistons’ 8-2 start, with Duren dominating the glass and Cunningham averaging 27.9 points and 9.9 assists per game.
