UNC volleyball extends winning streak over Montana, sweeps Big Sky Conference opponents

The University of Northern Colorado volleyball team beat Montana in a 22nd-straight match Saturday, and wrapped up a big weekend with two Big Sky Conference wins.

The Bears’ 3-1 victory over the Grizzlies at Bank of Colorado Arena completed the season sweep and kept UNC in a tie for second place in the conference standings. The Bears are 11-13 overall and 8-3 in the conference.

On Thursday evening, UNC avenged a loss to Montana State earlier in the season by sweeping the Bobcats in three tight sets.

“This was a key weekend for us,” UNC coach Lyndsey Oates said. “We needed to get a little separation in the Big Sky standings, and we took care of business. We didn’t do everything perfect, but I do like how we’re improving.”

UNC (11-13 overall) improves to 8-3 in the conference after the win over Montana (14-8). Sacramento State is also 8-3 with a six-match winning streak. Both schools trail Northern Arizona, which has won seven-straight for a 9-2 Big Sky record.

Montana’s loss dropped the Grizzlies into a three-way tie for third place. Montana, Montana State and Portland State all have 6-5 conference records.

UNC lost the first set to Montana 24-26 before rallying for three wins 25-13, 25-22 and 25-21. The Bears trailed in both the second and fourth sets, and used an extended run of points in each to pull out the win.

UNC fell behind 7-2 in the second set and won 10-straight points for a 12-7 lead. In the fourth and final set, the Bears trailed 14-7 and won seven of the next 10 points to cut the Grizzlies’ lead to 17-14. UNC went ahead 21-19 by winning eight of nine, and then earned the final three points after Montana won three in a row.

“We put ourselves in that situation in both of those sets to need that,” Oates said. “We kept saying ‘serve tough, serve tough, serve tough’ because we were not defending them very well when they were in system. But we were getting some errors and some blocks and some digs when they were out of system. It was really key that we were serving tough.”

Middle blocker Zoe Gibbs led the UNC attack with 13 kills and a .391 hitting percentage. Isabel Bennett and Alayna Tessena each had 12 kills. Brynn Reines added 11 digs and 13 digs.

UNC setter Nerea Alvarez Jorge had 45 assists, and defensive specialist Bella LePore added 14 digs.

Maddie Pyles and Delaney Russell both had 11 kills for Montana. Carley Spachman added eight kills. The Grizzlies had a .155 hitting percentage for the match to .287 for UNC.
