A Santa Clara man was arrested Tuesday after reportedly forcing himself into an apartment in Ukiah with a firearm, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
The UPD reported in a press release Wednesday that a caller from the Willow Terrace Apartments, located in the 200 block of East Gobbi Street, reported around 2:16 p.m. Oct. 28 that a man had forced his way into a woman’s home and was believed to be armed with a firearm.
The UPD reports that officers quickly responded to the complex, set up a perimeter, “and began coordinating with apartment management and the 35-year-old female tenant involved in the incident. Officers learned that the tenant had recently met the male suspect, who had been staying with her. Earlier that afternoon, the suspect allegedly forced entry into her apartment and brandished a firearm, prompting her to leave and call police.”
The UPD identified the suspect as Armando J. Garcia, 43, of Santa Clara, who reportedly had multiple felony warrants out for his arrest from three counties, including Lake County.
“Due to the severity of the situation and concerns for the safety of other residents, UPD officers evacuated the complex” and obtained an arrest warrant while issuing “a Nixle alert advising Ukiah residents to avoid the area due to active law enforcement operations.”
Around 3 p.m. Oct. 28, the Ukiah Police Department issued a “shelter in place” advisement due to police activity on East Gobbi Street at the Willow Terrace apartment complex, and later advised that East Gobbi Street was closed to traffic. The street remained closed for nearly three hours.
Personnel from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, the California Highway Patrol, the Mendocino Major Crimes Task Force and the Mendo-Lake Regional SWAT responded to assist the UPD, along with emergency medical personnel.
The UPD reported that “personnel from the MMCTF and Mendo-Lake Regional SWAT Team executed the arrest warrant, and Garcia was located inside the apartment and taken into custody without incident. A search of the residence led to the discovery of an imitation firearm and suspected illegal narcotics belonging to Garcia.”
Before Garcia was transported to the Mendocino County Jail, the UPD reports that “Garcia reported a medical emergency and was taken to Adventist Health Ukiah Valley for evaluation. After being medically cleared, he was booked and lodged at the Mendocino County Jail on outstanding warrants and related charges: suspicion of possessing a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm, evading a peace officer, domestic violence, illegal entry into a home, brandishing a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance with priors.
By 6 p.m. Oct. 28, the UPD had canceled the shelter in place advisement and reported that the incident was cleared.
The UPD also expressed “sincere appreciation to all partner agencies for their professionalism, coordination, and support during this incident.”
