Live and Local with RIBS! ...Middle East

Mike Wallace and Finn Cohen of the band RIBS stopped by Live & Local last week, ahead of the August 21 release of their second album, “Cold Ribs.”

RIBS (usually stylized in all caps, but it’s really up to you) is comprised of four Triangle music veterans: Wallace and Cohen plus David Mueller and Josh Gemeroth. They came together in this form sometime around the pandemic, but the band’s true origin goes back much further.

“We’ve all known each other for a while,” says Cohen. “I had played in a band with David, and then when I moved back to North Carolina, I started playing in this band with Mike and Josh called 300 Dog Night, that for me was like one of the most fun bands to be in…

“When the pandemic happened, it kind of stopped both of those things, (but) I still wanted to play with Mike and Josh and David. And so it just kind of fell together.”

Cohen, with half a laugh, says the original idea behind RIBS was to develop “purposefully dumb rock songs, like (something) from the first Led Zeppelin record.” What’s emerged instead is a post-punk sound more akin to The Fall, as Wallace channels Mark E. Smith with lyrics and vocals recorded over Cohen, Gemeroth and Mueller’s complex and heavy melodies.

“It’s very musically driven with melody and composition, but there’s all this space for the vocals just kind of set on top,” Wallace says. “I’m like the expediter – finishing the dish and bringing it out.”

“Mike (has) this energy and a sense of humor that’s really unique,” Cohen adds. “And every time, when we hear the vocals for the first time, it’s pretty fascinating. Some of it is really funny – and then some of it feels like a perspective that I didn’t have words for before.”

The new album officially drops on Friday, August 21; RIBS will celebrate a week and a day later with an album-release show Saturday, August 29 at Raleigh’s Lump Gallery, with Pipe and Cor de Lux opening. (Cor de Lux, based in the Outer Banks, has their own album due out in September.)

Listen to both of RIBS’ albums and purchase them on Bandcamp.

Finn Cohen and Mike Wallace stopped by Live & Local to discuss the new album and play three tracks: “Crashing Machine,” “Cold Daylight,” and “Working in Shoes.” Listen:
