The Oklahoma Sooners are gearing up for another top-25 SEC clash this Saturday against the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville, and star quarterback John Mateer will be looking to bounce back after a less-than-stellar performance last week against the Ole Miss Rebels.
Mateer, who entered the season as a Heisman frontrunner, has been dealing with several setbacks over the past several weeks, most notably a broken thumb in his throwing hand that required surgery.

The star gunslinger for the Sooners was asked about his recent struggles on the field by media members on Monday night, and he gave a very candid answer.
John Mateer was really good tonight speaking with the media. He was very candid talking about his struggles. “It’s definitely not my thumb. My thumb is fine.” #Sooners pic.twitter.com/f63V1BxuIW
— George Stoia III (@GeorgeStoia) October 28, 2025“I think that in this offense, you gotta be really disciplined as to where your eyes go,” Mateer said. “It’s pretty simple. It’s a simpler offense than a lot of others that are around college football, so I need to just get it done.”
Mateer was also asked whether or not the surgically repaired thumb in his throwing hand was causing any sort of problems still, and he quickly dismissed these concerns.
“It’s definitely not my thumb, I can tell you that,” Mateer said. “I’ll stand by that. There are just ups and downs in the flow of the game, I think, and I’m a human. I’m not perfect, so there are good times, there are bad times. Not to say that it’s bad, because I don’t really think it’s that bad… I’m still confident in what I’m looking at, and there’s just a couple that I missed.”
