A former suburban police officer was convicted by a jury of sexually abusing a woman after pulling her over on two separate occasions, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office said on Thursday.
Patrick Cacho, a 29-year-old former Park City police officer, was found guilty of 20 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, criminal sexual abuse, aggravated battery and official misconduct by a jury late Wednesday evening at the end of a trial that lasted three days, the state’s attorney’s office said.
He was first charged in April and relieved of all duties as a police officer following an Illinois State Police investigation prompted by an allegation made to the Park City Police Department by a friend of the victim after he assaulted her a second time.
During the trial, the woman described the “nonconsensual sexual contact” that occurred during separate traffic stops that Cacho initiated in December 2025 and January 2026. Cacho never turned on his body camera, never called into dispatch or documented the stops, and threatened her with criminal charges before assaulting her, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
Law enforcement officers, including ISP investigators, testified in court about the investigation, evidence and records from Park City police, and phone records that corroborated her testimony.
“By sexually abusing someone he had pulled over, this officer failed the public and his fellow police officers in every way possible,” Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said. “He intimidated and abused a member of our community when we were trusting him to protect people.”
Cacho testified in his own defense at the trial, denying the allegations and attempting to “discredit the victim and her account of what occurred,” according to the state’s attorney’s office.
Rinehart called Cacho’s testimony “incredible lies,” and both praised the woman for coming forward and thanked the authorities, victim support counselors and prosecutors for the work that contributed to the outcome of the trial.
“Because of this courageous victim, this offender will now face the strong prospect of years in prison,” Rinehart said.
Cacho faces up to seven years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
His next court date is scheduled for Dec. 17.
