Back-to-back clunker games for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams don’t have me wanting to pull the plug on this experience, but they are a cause for concern.
CHICAGO BEARS WEEK 8: Game Recap | Instant Grades | The Nightcap
To be clear, I’m not sounding alarms just yet. However, I am noticing some patterns that, if they continue throughout the duration of this season, will have me raising questions about the long-term future of the position. My biggest grievance to air on the morning after a Bears win begins this soul-crushing interception by Nate Wiggins on a 2nd-and-9 play intended for Rome Odunze with 9:09 left in the fourth quarter with the Bears trailing by three points:

— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) October 26, 2025How it was discussed after the game raises some yellow flags for me.
Caleb Williams, via the Tribune: “He undercut the route. I could’ve led (Odunze) farther out in front instead of trying to give him a shot right here (in his chest). (Wiggins) made a great break on the play. Just unfortunate where we were on the field in the situation.” More via Marquee’s Nicholas Moreano: “Yeah, I, uh, it was a good read. Rome man to man with the guy that caught the pick. I just didn’t give a good ball to Rome.” This is what Ben Johnson had to say (via ESPN) about the pick: “In my mind, there might have been another option that we could have gotten to.”This hints at a pretty serious disconnect between Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams. Let me be clear and underscore that this isn’t the end of the world. I hope this doesn’t get overblown or framed as the coach throwing his quarterback under the bus. Even Johnson said he’d like to get back in the film room and dissect that play again to analyze options. I imagine Williams will join him in that session. Ultimately, I expect something productive to come from that meeting of the minds.
Ideally, Caleb eventually sees what Ben does and makes corrections moving forward that will keep this from happening again. In rewatching that play, I think that Williams should come away from that moment realizing that it was as much of a result of timing and processing as it was ball placement. Because if that is the read, then you have to grip it, rip it, and rocket it in there to Rome Odunze. Otherwise, you put yourself at risk of what happened — a backbreaking interception.

To answer the question above in a brief and concise manner: No.
For the sake of perspective, let’s compare and contrast the first seven starts of Caleb Williams and Jared Goff under Ben Johnson:
WILLIAMS: 138/223 (61.9%), 1,636 pass yards, 9 TD (4.0 TD%), 4 INT (1.8 INT%), 7.3 Y/A, 90.2 passer rating GOFF: 159/249 (63.9%), 1,904 pass yards, 12 TD (4.8 TD%), 6 INT (2.4 INT%), 7.6 Y/A, 93.2 ratingThe numbers have been eerily similar throughout this season. Given Ben’s track record and Caleb’s prospect pedigree, I’m willing to see this through. Because if you trust Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson as much as I do, then you’ll exercise some patience and let him cook with Caleb until there is a point of no return. Seven games with Johnson as his head coach simply aren’t enough for me to go scorched earth on this tandem.
Since our site’s existence, we endured four years and 50 starts of Mitchell Trubisky. We also watched Justin Fields make 38 starts over three seasons. Hence, I have no issue riding it out with Caleb Williams until the wheels fall off. After all, it is what we did with his predecessors. Why should he be treated any different?

Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn ImagesLet’s pause to look at Caleb Williams’ updated 17-game projection:
335/542 (61.9%) 3,973 pass yards 22 touchdowns 10 interceptions 29 sacks takenLess than 24 hours after watching the Bears get reality check’d by the Ravens on Sunday, here’s is one more for the road: The Bears will give Caleb two years with this coaching staff and in this scheme before making a long-term decision (a.k.a. when the time comes to make a decision on the fifth-year option, which is after a first-round pick’s third season). I’m writing this now to give fans enough time to settle in with what might be an uncomfortable reality — particularly among those who want to bench Caleb in favor of Tyson Bagent this instant.
Ben Johnson was hired to build this Bears thing from the ground up. I didn’t expect any quick fixes. Between how Johnson has spoken about this team and has gone about his business as a first-year head coach, he wasn’t expecting any quick fixes either. Maybe Tyson Bagent provides a short-term pick-me-up. Backup quarterbacks will do that from time to time, and watching the Tyler Huntley experience is a reminder of what can happen in a flash. But these Bears don’t want a flash. So brace yourselves for some more ups-and-downs as this season runs its course.
