A grand century-old estate on one of Pasadena’s largest residential parcels is on the market for $11 million.
The brick-clad English Period Revival-style mansion, set behind a gated entrance on a 4-acre-plus lot, was designed by notable architects Reginald Johnson, Gordon Kaufmann and Roland Coate, Sr. It spans 5,910 square feet and features five bedrooms and five bathrooms.
Only two families have owned this historic property since its completion in 1924.
The home was originally built for Katherine and Wilfred K. Barnard, a prominent civil engineer who played a role in shaping Southern California’s infrastructure, including the development of Union Station and the L.A. Harbor. It last sold in 1974 to the physician Earl Brian and his wife, Jane, who remained in the home after their divorce, living there with her second husband, the businessman and philanthropist John “Joe” Fehrenbacher.
Jane Fehrenbacher, known for her longtime patronage of the arts and community involvement, died in February 2021 at 77.
Under its current ownership, the estate has seen many improvements while preserving its original architectural style.
The formal entrance hall leads to the public spaces, including the formal living room highlighted by a cast-concrete fireplace encased in wood paneling.
French doors open from the living room to the outdoor areas.
An updated butler’s pantry connects the dining room to the gourmet kitchen, which has also been modernized. Additional spaces include a breakfast room and a den with a fireplace.
Upstairs, the spacious primary bedroom features a fireplace and a balcony.
The estate’s park-like grounds boast a lighted tennis court, a swimming pool and a deck that overlooks the scenic Arroyo Seco, Colorado Street Bridge and the San Gabriel Mountains.
The George Penner Team at Compass has the listing.
The architectural firm of Johnson, Kaufmann and Coate designed notable landmarks such as Pasadena’s All Saints Episcopal Church and the original Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, along with luxury residential projects, during its three-year partnership that began in 1922.
In 1925, the members of the firm chose to branch out and establish independent practices.
