WEBSTER, N.Y. — Five days after severe thunderstorms and tornadoes rolled through Western New York and the Finger Lakes, people are still cleaning up.
News10NBC reporter Erin Mahon spoke with the Kleinhammer family on Klem Road in Webster the day after the storm. The branch from a 100-year-old tree fell on their home Wednesday night, crashing through the second-floor bedroom and landing on top of the first-floor office. The tree took the power line with it, leaving the Kleinhammers without power.
Crews removed the tree on Saturday. The area where the tree hit is now covered in tarp, which is bolted to the siding of the house.
“Yeah we’re still waiting to get word from the powers that be, you know. No, we don’t have any idea as of this time,” Sarajane Kleinhammer said regarding when the power might be restored.
When asked how they were holding up, she remained positive.
“Good. But, you know, like I said, told you when you came by, ‘Nothing to do about it.’ We’re just fortunate we didn’t get hurt,” Kleinhammer said.
The Kleinhammers have been staying at a hotel since Thursday night. They are still working with insurance to compile everything for their claim. Sarajane Kleinhammer said her son lives just down the road and both he and their daughter have been a big help in coordinating repair efforts.
On Saturday, the National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-1 tornado rolled through Webster on Wednesday. It was one of eight confirmed tornadoes so far. It developed about five miles east of the Kleinhammer home on Salt Road just north of Route 104.
