Cricket Australia (CA) has approved private investment in the Big Bash League (BBL), Australia’s domestic T20 cricket. The governing body announced the decision on Tuesday, September 8, and confirmed that the process will begin with the sale of the Melbourne Renegades licence to private investors.
CA chair Mike Baird and chief executive Todd Greenberg revealed the decision at the Sydney Cricket Ground alongside Pat Cummins and Ellyse Perry. The board plans to complete the Renegades sale before the 2027-28 BBL and WBBL seasons, with the franchise expected to operate under new ownership.
The Melbourne Renegades will be run in caretaker mode by Cricket Australia (CA) during the 2026-27 Australian summer. The sale process will not affect their participation in the upcoming BBL and WBBL seasons, with the franchise set to operate under its current structure.
CA will invite bids for a 100 per cent stake in the Renegades licence, with the aim of having new owners in place for the 2027-28 BBL and WBBL seasons. The franchise recently signed West Indies star Hayley Matthews for the upcoming WBBL campaign.
The Renegades’ name, colours and other branding could change under new ownership, but any changes will require CA approval. The governing body will also retain the power to approve or reject potential investors and set an undisclosed reserve price for the sale.
Private owners will take control of the franchise, but CA will continue to oversee several key aspects of the BBL and WBBL. These include international scheduling, player availability, salary caps and media rights.

CA Approves ‘Self-Determination’ Model for Other BBL Teams
Once the Renegades sale is completed, CA will consider bringing other Big Bash teams to the market under a “self-determination” model. This will allow each state association to assess its situation and decide whether to sell a stake in its franchise.
The Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Stars, and Perth Scorchers are understood to be interested in private investment. Cricket NSW, which oversees the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder, along with the Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers, are currently reluctant to pursue a sale.
However, those teams could still explore private investment later under the new model. CA said it would continue “constructive discussions” with the state associations and the Australian Cricketers’ Association during the Renegades sale process.
The move could also open the door for overseas investors, including owners from the Indian Premier League, to enter the Big Bash. However, CA will continue to have a say in any future ownership changes and branding decisions.
