Here’s hoping National RBs Day becomes a thing in the future.
If it does, then Chicago Bears fans will likely remember it fondly because of the contributions of running backs D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai in the team’s Week 7 victory against the New Orleans Saints.

Are you unfamiliar with National Running Backs Day? It’s OK. I was unfamiliar with it until yesterday Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth brought it to my attention during the Sunday Night Football broadcast. Some back story from SNF (via Awful Announcing):

— Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing.bsky.social) October 19, 2025 at 10:40 PMTight ends have their day. Other position groups get theirs. Every day feels like quarterback day. So why shouldn’t running backs have their time to shine? All in all, it feels fitting that the Bears’ running back tandem of D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai went off on National Running Backs Day. After all, there is no NFL franchise that is more synonymous with running back greatness than the Bears.
Did the Bears discover a winning formula on National RBs Day?
Let’s run down the ground game numbers from the Bears’ ball-carriers from Sunday’s win in Week 7:
D’ANDRE SWIFT
19 carries 124 rushing yards 1 TD 6.5 yards per attempt 6 first-down runs Team-leading 81.3 grade from Pro Football FocusThis is what I was envisioning when he signed as a free agent last offseason.
So long as D’Andre Swift continues to perform like he has in each of the last two weeks, the whispers about the Bears needing to acquire a running back via trade will be silenced. It’s not just that Swift is putting up numbers. Instead, what is moving the needle for me is his running style. Swift is running with a lean, being decisive when hitting the hole, and accelerating into the second level. Let’s take a moment to credit the offensive line for creating the holes in the first place. But we also need to acknowledge that Swift, who wasn’t hitting the holes with authority earlier in the season, is doing so now.

13 carries 81 rushing yards 1 TD 6.2 yards per attempt 6 first-down runsI have a feeling that we will look back on Week 7 as the game when Kyle Monangai secured the role of being the tandem partner who pairs with D’Andre Swift.
TDs on National RBs Day: D’Andre Swift | Kyle Monangai
The stuff we saw on Monangai’s college tape and on highlight reels has started to show up on game day. His aesthetically pleasing style that feeds my inner-meatball’s desire to run the ball down the opponent’s throat on every play. Monangai has ran well when given opportunities. And now that he is getting more of them, I expect for it to continue. Maybe not to the tune of 6.2 yards per pop. But he should be effective and efficient enough to give Chicago a 1-2 punch on the ground.
It would be swell to see this every week from now until Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson hangs up his headset and calls his final game as an offensive play-caller in Chicago (in about 20 years or so):
Did all the outside runs from the Bears last week help create the cutback lanes that D'Andre Swift hit yesterday? Maybe. Good illustration of the different ways Swift and the run game attacked defenses, Week 7 vs. Week 6 via Next Gen Stats[image or embed]
— Kevin Fishbain (@kfishbain.bsky.social) October 20, 2025 at 8:54 AMBears offensive play callers have struggled to carve out a niche for the running game in recent years. Despite having Jordan Howard and David Montgomery, Matt Nagy couldn’t do it (and in some cases, wasn’t willing to do it). Save for Justin FIelds’ moments of brilliance, Luke Getsy failed at creating a worthwhile ground attack. The less I say about Shane Waldron’s attempts at generating offense, the better it is for everyone reading this on a Victory Monday.
In the end, I am glad we were able to celebrate National Running Backs Day with a win. Here’s to many more.
