‘Distraught and emotional’ Christian McCaffrey reflects on gruesome Fred Warner injury that left 49ers in horror

The San Francisco 49ers just cannot catch a break.

On their way to suffering a 30-19 loss to a resurgent Baker Mayfield — one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks right now — and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Niners had to contend with the devastating loss of Fred Warner to a serious ankle injury.

A hugely influential figure in San Francisco’s leadership group, Warner’s injury left his teammates distraught, including running back Christian McCaffrey.

Speaking after the game, ‘one-of-one’ superstar McCaffrey was visibly emotional talking about the All-Pro linebacker.

“It’s heartbreaking,” a ‘distraught and emotional’ McCaffrey said. “It’s such a weird game where you have to see somebody like that.

“And what happened with [Nick] Bosa earlier in the year and then just have to continue to play, it’s kind of a weird deal. But, it’s heartbreaking.

“He’s one of the best players I’ve ever played with. One of the best leaders I’ve ever played with. It’s just heartbreaking.”

Warner, 28, dislocated and broke his right ankle when a couple of players fell into him during a play late on in the first quarter.

He was carted off the field with an air cast wrapped around his leg, but not before the entire 49ers sideline came on the field to send their well-wishes to their beloved teammate.

Mayfield even got down on one knee and started praying for Warner in the middle of the field.

It was later revealed that he will need surgery, and thus will miss the rest of the season.

    49ers’ avalanche of injuries continues

Warner is now just one more name in a long line of injured players for the Niners, joining defensive end Bosa, who suffered a torn ACL in Week 2, and offensive stars George Kittle and $265m star Brock Purdy, as well as many of the receiving corps including Ricky Pearsall, who was shot after signing autographs and Brandon Aiyuk.

With Purdy out of action with turf toe and a shoulder injury – despite returning for Week 4 before being sidelined again – backup Mac Jones has been leading the 49ers under center, and he also spoke of his devastation over Warner’s injury.

“Fred’s been the leader of this team for a long time,” Jones said. “Really all you can do is pray for him. I know we have his back. I was disappointed that I didn’t play better for him today.”

All-time great left-tackle Trent Williams also spoke candidly on his teammate, calling him the “heart and soul of this team.”

“Not only is he one of the best linebackers to ever play the game, he’s the heart and soul of this team, not just the heart and soul of the defense,” Williams said.

“It’s one thing to see somebody go down and go to the blue tent. Nobody really knows what’s going on.

“When you see a guy that’s injured like that, it’s really like a gut punch. It truly is hard to continue the intensity of playing game like that never happened.”

In the aftermath of Warner’s injury, and with both the offense and defense depleted, the Niners were unable to stop the wrath of a surging Bucs team, with quarterback Mayfield continuing to play light’s out and add to his bid of being a legitimate MVP candidate in 2025.

Mayfield even paused to acknowledge Warner before answering the first question in his postgame press conference.

“First of all, losing in the middle of the game Fred Warner, I mean that sucks,” Mayfield said. “You never want to see that, so thoughts and prayers with him.”

Although Jones completed 27-of-39 of his passes for 347 yards, 142 of which were completed by emergency pick-up wide receiver Kendrick Bourne from just five targets, the former New England Patriots first-round draft pick couldn’t muster a touchdown, and recorded two interceptions on the game.

The Niners defense, without Bosa and Warner, allowed 352 yards which is the second-most of the season so far, though it was a vast improvement of their season-low 456 total yards allowed in their nail-biting overtime win against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5.
