Beloved actressDiane Keatonpassed away on Saturday, October 11, at the age of 79. The Oscar winner, known for her iconic roles in Annie Hall, Something’s Gotta Give and The Family Stone, passed away unexpectedly, according to those closest to her.
“She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her,” a friend told People. “It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit."
The source added, "In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”
As of now, no official cause of death has been released.
Just months before her passing, Keaton made a surprising decision when she listed her cherished Los Angeles estate, often referred to as her “dream home,” for $29 million.
The five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home had been a labor of love. Keaton moved in back in 2017 and spent eight years renovating it. Her love for architecture and design even led her to publish a coffee-table book titled The House That Pinterest Built, which documented the process.
Given her attachment to the property, the March 2025 listing came as an unexpected move especially after she’d expressed plans to stay there long-term.
Though she hadn’t disclosed any recent medical diagnoses, Keaton had been candid over the years about her health challenges — especially her battles with skin cancer and bulimia.
She was first diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma at just 21 years old. From then on, sun safety became a major priority.
“It’s a family history,” she told the Los Angeles Times in 2015. “I remember my Auntie Martha had skin cancer so bad they removed her nose. My father had basal skin cancer and my brother had it. It’s tricky with this skin cancer. That’s why you’ve got to put the sunblock on.”
Keaton became known for her iconic wide-brimmed hats which were more than just a fashion statement as they also served as a form of sun protection.
“Back in my 20s I didn’t pay attention much,” she admitted. “I didn’t research and didn’t really care and that was stupid because it’s dogged me my entire adult life, even recently. I didn’t start sun care until my 40s.”
Years later, she faced another skin cancer scare, squamous cell carcinoma, which reportedly required two surgeries.
Keaton also spoke openly about her past struggle with bulimia nervosa, a serious eating disorder.
Her struggles began after she was asked to lose 10 pounds for a role on Broadway. “All I did was feed my hunger, so I am an addict,” she told Dr. Oz in 2014. “It’s true. I’m an addict in recovery, I’ll always be an addict. I have an addictive nature to me.”
She described consuming as many as 20,000 calories a day, then vomiting afterward. “Typical dinner was a bucket of chicken, several orders of fries with blue cheese and ketchup, a couple TV dinners, a quart of soda, pounds of candy, a whole cake and three banana cream pies.”
Keaton eventually sought help. “Somebody mentioned that I seemed to have some mental issues, so I went to an analyst,” she shared. “I would go five days a week.”
In her 2011 memoir, Then Again, she reportedly reflected on her experience. “I have nothing to hide. It’s not relevant, but for me it feels good,” she wrote. “I think I’m a sister to all the rest of the women, and I’m sure men as well, who have had some kind of eating disorder, and I’m a part of the team.”
