Jane Fonda shared an emotional farewell following the passing of her fellow veteran actress and good friend Diane Keaton.
On Saturday, the Smother star passed away in California at the age of 79, as confirmed by a family spokesperson who told People magazine, which first reported the news.
"There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness," the spokesperson added.
The Oscar-winning actress is survived by her two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke.
Keaton is best known for her roles in Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club and Annie Hall, which earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 1978 Academy Awards.
In addition, she also starred in the 2018 rom-com Book Club, which also stars Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen and Jane Fonda.
Speaking of her co-stars, the Monster-in-Law star looked back on a lifetime of friendship with the late actress in a moving tribute.
In an Instagram post shared after the news broke, Fonda admitted that she struggled to “accept” that Keaton was gone.

Despite her grief, she took a moment to celebrate the actress’s beautiful life and bid farewell to the unforgettable bond they shared.
“It’s hard to believe...or accept…that Diane has passed. She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man, she was a fine actress!” she wrote.
Fans also chimed in, flooding the comments with heartfelt messages for the award-winning star.
“Watching The Family Stone this Christmas will hit a lot harder. I loved her,” one wrote.
“Beautifully said. She was authentically beautiful in every way,” a commenter added.
Gold Coast star Mary Steenburgen also took to the comments section to share her heartbreak, writing, “Yes, hard to believe. Perfect tribute to the American treasure that was Diane.”
After filming Book Club, Fonda told Today that “real friendships were formed” even though it was their first time working together.
At the time, while others shared that their favorite part of making the movie was getting to know each other, Keaton playfully admitted that, for her, it was the kissing scene with Andy Garcia.
