Thomas Tuchel issues challenge to England squad as he addresses Craig Bellamy’s ‘slow death’ comments

Thomas Tuchel has responded to Craig Bellamy’s statement that teams cannot just sit back and defend against England.

Wales boss Bellamy said that his side would ‘die a slow death’ at Wembley if they didn’t take the game to the Three Lions.

The Dragons are looking to make a real statement against their neighbours on Thursday – live on talkSPORT – to kickstart the international break.

Under Tuchel, England have only lost one of their six games and have proven to be an extremely dominant side.

Against Albania, Latvia and Serbia, the Three Lions averaged over 70 per cent possession and didn’t concede a single goal.

They won those games 2-0, 3-0 and 5-0 respectively, beating Andorra twice with over 80 per cent of the ball in those games.

Tuchel’s one defeat at England boss came at the hands of Senegal and that was the game his side had the lowest possession of his reign, finishing the game with 61 per cent.

Bellamy has clearly assessed that trend and wants his Wales side to bring the game to their rivals to avoid a beating.

“I don’t believe England struggle with teams that defend deep,” the Welsh boss said at his pre-match press conference.

“Do Serbia defend deep? I believe if you play this England team and defend deep, you will die a slow death.”

It means Wales are likely to come fast out of the blocks at Wembley in their quest to try and beat the Three Lions for the first time since 1984.

And that poses a challenge to Tuchel, who has been told about Bellamy’s statement ahead of their meeting.

Tuchel and England ‘up for it’

Tuchel gave his take on Bellamy’s pre-match comments, using them to send a defiant message to his England squad.

He exclusively told talkSPORT: “Even with him not saying it, we are very well aware that they will try to implement their style.

“They play very aggressively, they play with a lot of courage, it’s a very well-drilled team, a well-coached team.

“They play high and up the pitch, they try to put a lot of pressure on opponents… the best example was in Belgium, where they really dominated the ball, created a lot of chances but lost unluckily.

“This is what they do to teams if you are not well prepared, if you don’t match their effort, if you don’t match their hunger, you will suffer, so we don’t want this.

“We are up for an intense match.”

    Kane ruled out

However, England are going to be facing Wales without their captain and superstar striker Harry Kane.

Kane picked up an injury playing for Bayern Munich at the weekend and he has not recovered in time to feature.

Tuchel revealed to talkSPORT: “No, he’s not available tomorrow.

“It’s too painful in his foot, he couldn’t kick the ball in the beginning of the week. And the risk that we will make it worse when he plays is too high. So, he will be available for Latvia.”

On who could take the armband from Kane, the Three Lions boss added: “I have some clues… it will John Stones, Declan Rice or Jordan Henderson, one of the three.

“I know who I will give it, but they don’t know if they start. They are the three at the moment who are pushing the standards and setting the standards, they are the leaders.”
