Australia captain Pat Cummins is set to miss the first Ashes Test against England.
The Aussies are expected to be without their talismanic all-rounder when the highly-anticipated series begins on November 21 at Perth Stadium.
With the fifth and final Test starting just six weeks later on January 4, there are fears Cummins will be ruled out for the entire series.
Although Cricket Australia are yet to officially confirm the news, it is widely reported that recent scans showed a long-term back injury is yet to heal.
Cummins has not played since the 3-0 series win over the West Indies in July, before missing the recent white-ball matches against South Africa and New Zealand.
He will play no part in the upcoming ODIs and T20s against India later this month and, while his rehabilitation continues, the 32-year-old is still unable to bowl just six weeks out from the first Ashes Test.
Should Cummins miss the series, it would mark a huge blow to Australia’s chances of retaining the Ashes, with many already sensing a rare opportunity for England to win Down Under for the first time since 2011.
Scott Boland is likely to fill the void left by Cummins in Australia’s pace attack, while Steve Smith will almost-certainly deputise as captain.
Cummins turns down $10m offer to quit
Two stories about Cummins emerged on Wednesday, the second relating to a $10million offer to quit Cricket Australia, which was swiftly rejected.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, both Cummins and Australia teammate Travis Head were both informally offered the chance to play franchise cricket all-year round for mouthwatering sums.
It would more than triple the yearly amount Cummins receives to play international cricket.
The news reportedly emerged during talks about privatising the Big Bash League – to illustrate fears surround Australia’s grip on its international players.
There have even been questions about Cummins’ long-term future in international cricketGettyEngland bowler Jofra Archer turned a similar offer from Mumbai Indians in 2023, while South African Heinrich Klaasen recently quit international cricket to play franchise events full-time.
Can England win the Ashes in Australia?
England legend Chris Woakes joined talkSPORT earlier this week, days after announcing his retirement from international cricket.
And although Woakes will play no part, he believes England have an excellent chance to regain the Ashes for the first time since 2018.
“It’ll always always be difficult going Down Under,” he told the Breakfast Show.
“It’s never easy going there in those conditions. They’re so strong there, but it feels like we’ve got a great opportunity, more so than I’ve seen in the last 15 years.
“We’ve got a great opportunity to do something special. It feels weird sitting on the other side of the fence now, I can actually stand here and with confidence saying we’re gonna win.
Woakes’ last Test for England saw him bat with one arm in a slingGetty“I genuinely think we’ve got a great chance and I think we will [win]. It feels like the team’s building in the right direction.
“We haven’t quite got over the line over the last few years in the big series, but I feel like this one could be could be the time.”
What is the feeling in Australia?
Meanwhile, it seems the Aussies are starting to get a little nervous, too – especially if Cummins is ruled out for the series.
Writing in The Sydney Morning Herald, columnist Daniel Brettig said: “Pat Cummins out of the Perth Test and possibly the whole Ashes series? It’s Australia’s worst nightmare, and England’s dream.”
