Bears Flu Game? Darnell Wright is Flying in For Week 17

Are we about to get a Chicago Bears Flu Game?

The team is getting some good news on the health front. Brad Biggs shares the latest:

#Bears RT Darnell Wright is en route to Santa Clara. He did not travel with the team Saturday because of an illness.Wright is questionable and his availability will be a game-time decision. He's had a Pro Bowl-caliber season and this is potentially good news.

Bears Flu Game Watch: Wright, Moore, Zaccheaus, Others

As Brad Biggs reports above, Bears starting right tackle Darnell Wright is going out to Cali for the squad’s Sunday Night Football showdown against the San Francisco 49ers. Wright was a late addition to the injury report because of an illness. And it was serious enough to where he didn’t even travel with the team. I thought it was unlikely that Wright would make the cross-country trek after seeing his name on the injury report, but the questionable designation handed down by the team left the window open for the big-time blocker to suit up for Week 17. Wright’s status for the game could be a true game-time decision. Stay tuned.

While there is some newfound optimism regarding Darnell Wright’s status, two more Bears players were added to the Week 17 injury report. The team announced (via Twitter/X) that wide receivers DJ Moore and Olamide Zaccheaus are questionable for Sunday’s game because of an illness. That makes eight players on Chicago’s football team who showed up on the injury report because of an illness.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport has more on that:

The Insiders on @NFLGameDay Morning with @MikeGarafolo: The #Steelers will be short-handed at WR with DK Metcalf out; The #Bears have been masking up on buses and planes, hoping to limit the spread of the flu. But they may be short-handed tonight; The #Eagles are playing to win. pic.twitter.com/eQy7jccRF8

    More Rap:

“Basically, the whole team got the flu. It’s like that scene in “My Cousin Vinny” that’s where they are right now. … Several players have the flu. What the Bears have tried to do to minimize the spread of this is ask players, insist players wear masks on buses and flights to stop the spread of this thing. My understanding is that most of the team is coming out of this.”

Well, that is a bit of good news. For those of you who were in the trenches here during the NFL’s journey through the COVID-riddled 2020 season, you might recall how illnesses spread quickly through locker rooms and caused havoc when it came to game day. Perhaps that experience has helped guide teams (like the Bears in this instance) on how to handle these situations. We’ll have updates later. Hopefully, Darnell Wright (and others) will be ready to roll at kickoff.
