Frustrated Liverpool fans have urged Arne Slot to drop Mo Salah from the starting XI.
Salah was anonymous in the Reds’ 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday, touching the ball just 35 times in the 90 minutes.
The spotlight has fallen on the 33-year-old over the last seven days as Slot’s side have lost three straight games.
Salah has just two Premier League goals this season and supporters called into talkSPORT in their droves to call for him to be dropped.
Reds fan Francis said: “I’m being controversial here. He should drop Salah. If you remember when Klopp won the title, back in 2019/2020, when we tried to defend it, the same thing happened. Then we started losing games left, right and centre.
“This is the same thing. I think history is repeating itself here again. I honestly think he should drop Salah.”
Liverpool fan Jordan added: “We are not necessarily better off without him. I don’t think his performances warrant starting every week.
“I’m not saying that him playing every week is the reason we’re that bad. It’s clearly a system issue at the minute.
“We’ve made quite a lot of changes again today. It seems to be a common theme where we’re bringing off certain players.
“It’s almost like a lottery where he’s just going to his bench, looking who’s there and going, you come onto the pitch now. There’s no structure to the team.
“I do think Salah should be dropped because if you’re not performing, I don’t care who you are, you shouldn’t be playing.”
Salah played the full 90 minutes against Chelsea and has played all but one minute of Liverpool’s Premier League season so far.
Salah is not quite on his usual goal contribution paceHe was, however, rested in the Champions League defeat to Galatasaray – making a 28 minute cameo from the bench.
UFC star Paddy Pimblett even called in to speak to talkSPORT’s Rory Jennings to argue that Salah needs to be taken off.
Die-hard Liverpool fan Pimblett said: “I love Salah, he’s one of the best players we’ve ever had, but it gets to a point where he needs to come off.
“The Endo substitution was one of the worst I’ve seen.”
The Wataru Endo substitution he is referring to is Alexis Mac Allister being taken off for the Japan star, while Federico Chiesa was still on the bench.
What did Arne Slot say?
Slot defended his star man in the face of criticism while speaking to talkSPORT after the game.
Slot defended star man Salah – and usually keeps him on for the full 90 minutesGettyWhen asked to reflect on Salah’s performances this season, Slot said: “I think today he came in a lot. [There were] a lot of promising situations.
“Normally with Mo, that means that leads to goals. Today it didn’t. So, yeah, that is what I saw.”
In a separate interview, Slot added: Slot said: “That’s then interesting. Did he create so much today because he didn’t play during the week? Or did he miss the chances because he missed a bit of sharpness that he could have had if he’d played against Galatasaray? We will never know.
“What I like is that he got many times in a position he would like to be in and I would like him to be in. He has shown in his career and since I’m here that he can score goals.”
Chelsea’s Salah game plan
Marc Cucurella highlighted Salah’s position on the pitch as something to target and it eventually led to Estevao Willian’s late winner for Chelsea.
“We know that Salah is always ready for the counter attack so we practiced that and the manager said that the space might be there [on the right side of Liverpool],” Cucurella told Sky Sports.
Estevao sent the Chelsea faithful into wild celebrations with his winning goalGetty“We saw that it was the last minute but we kept attacking. I tried to give my last effort and Enzo gave me the ball and I crossed for Estevao.
“I think we deserve it. We started the game very well and then the second-half we started not in the right way again – we need to improve these things.
“But in general I think we deserve this win. We came through some tough weeks, this moment was amazing and we go into the break with three points, so we are very happy.”
