CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A tragic scene unfolded Wednesday night in the parking deck of a busy Charlotte shopping center when a 16-year-old boy was shot and later died from his injuries at the hospital, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
CMPD has identified the victim as 16-year-old Alexander Cruz Martinez. The shooting happened just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, in the parking deck outside the Target store at 900 Metropolitan Avenue, near the heart of the city, according to a CMPD police report.
CMPD officers responded to calls of an assault with a deadly weapon in the parking deck area of the shopping center. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Martinez with several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Atrium Health-Main, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities confirmed.
CMPD's Homicide Unit detectives and crime scene investigators were at the scene on Wednesday night, working to gather evidence and interview witnesses. As of Thursday, the investigation remains active and ongoing, and no arrests have been announced.
