Why Dave Ramseys Daughter Rachel Cruz Says Her Childhood Was Different From Most

Life in the Ramsey household wasn’t quite what people might imagine.

Rachel Cruze, the daughter of financial guru Dave Ramsey, says her upbringing stood apart from that of her peers — though not in the ways many assume.

“I think people really assume that we grew up in like a really legalistic, money household, where we had mutual fund [themed] birthday parties, and went to budget camp in the summer and it was all money-focused all the time,” Cruze told PEOPLEin an article shared on Tuesday, September 30. “And honestly, that was not the case. And now I’m so thankful to look back and be like, yes, that was not the case at all.”

Still, the family did have its own rules. One example: when the kids turned 16, they were expected to cover half the cost of their first car. “The quality of the car depended upon us working and saving,” Cruze recalled, noting her father even branded the arrangement the “401 Dave Plan,” where he would match what they saved.

Now a two-time bestselling author and host of The Rachel Cruze Show, the 37-year-old helps others navigate money just as her parents taught her and her siblings. The lessons started early. “Mom and dad were really intentional with teaching us how money works, but they were not overly helicopter [parents], if you will, with our money. So we did have to earn money. He was really big on that,” Cruze explained.

One of the strictest household policies? No allowance. “We were never given an allowance, we were always on commission. So you work, you get paid, you don’t work, you don’t get paid,” she said. Alongside working, her parents stressed giving and saving, dividing earnings into three envelopes for charity, savings, and spending.  Cruze admits she wasn’t perfect with money management. “I actually bounced three checks the second month I had my account,” she recalled, laughing about having to apologize to the bank manager.

Dave became a household name after overcoming bankruptcy in the 1980s and building a career teaching others how to manage money. His radio program, The Ramsey Show, along with bestselling books like The Total Money Makeover, turned him into one of America’s most recognized financial experts. Off-air, he’s been married to his wife Sharon since 1982, and together they raised three children — Rachel, Denise, and Daniel.
