FORT COLLINS — Colorado State head football coach Jay Norvell announced Monday he is turning play calling duties over to associate head coach Matt Mumme beginning this week.
Norvell said at his weekly press conference Mumme will be relaying the plays to quarterback Jackson Brousseau starting Friday night when the Rams visit San Diego State.
“We’re going to make decisions that are going to help the football team and Matt and I have been handling the offense for a long time, nine years together,” Norvell said. “Matt’s going to communicate with the quarterback this week. He has done a good job and we’re just going to change it up that way.”
The move comes after a dismal offensive performance by the Rams against Washington State last Saturday that produced only a field goal in a 20-3 loss at Canvas Stadium.
CSU has the second-worst scoring offense in the Mountain West Conference averaging 12.25 points per game. In a three-game September homestand in which they went 1-2, the Rams averaged only 13 points per contest.
Mumme came to CSU with Norvell from Nevada and after three seasons together at CSU, Mumme was elevated to “pass game coordinator” prior to this season. Now he will take on a new role as the play caller.
“We need a little spark,” Norvell said. “We’ll continue to make changes and adjustments throughout the year, like we do every year, so this is no different.”
Mumme, a native of Stephenville, Texas began his coaching career at Southeastern Louisiana in 2003 coaching quarterbacks. He has made stops at New Mexico State, McMurry, Davidson and Nevada where he was either the quarterbacks coach or offensive coordinator.
His father, Hal Mumme, is considered the designer of the “Air Raid” offense.
