Kornev set a new World Cup Record in the 50 back last week in a time of 22.23, and then followed up by winning the 100 free later in the session in a world record-tying swim of 44.84.
WOMEN’S 400 IM – TIMED FINAL
World Record: 4:15.48, Summer McIntosh (CAN) – 2024 World Cup Record: 4:18.94, Mireia Belmonte (ESP) – 2017 Yu Yiting (CHN), 4:27.09 Abbie Wood (GBR), 4:28.90 Waka Kobori (JPN), 4:29.02The field in the women’s 400 IM was significantly slower as a whole compared to where it was last week in Baku, but it was Yu Yiting claiming her second straight title in the event in decisive fashion.
Yu, who set a lifetime best last week in a time of 4:24.09, was exactly three seconds slower tonight in Tashkent, but it was enough to claim the victory by nearly two seconds as she clocked 4:27.09.
Once again, Yu opened a massive lead through the halfway mark, and though she steadily lost ground to Abbie Wood and Waka Kobori on the back half, she held on for the victory.
Wood won her second straight silver in the event, touching in 4:28.95, exactly one second slower than she was last week, and Kobori was close behind in 3rd (4:29.02) to improve on her 4th-place finish last week (when she clocked 4:28.97).
China’s Chang Mohan, who won bronze last week in 4:28.76, was a distant 5th in 4:36.09.
MEN’S 50 BACK – FINAL
World Record: 22.11, Kliment Kolesnikov (RUS) – 2022 World Cup Record: 22.23, Egor Kornev (RUS) – 2026 Pieter Coetze (RSA), 22.09 WR, WC Egor Kornev (RUS), 22.29 Pavel Samusenko (RUS), 22.35Pieter Coetze used a blistering back half to stop the clock in a new world record time in the final of the men’s 50 back, touching in a scintillating 22.09.
Coetze turned in 10.92 at the 25, eight one-hundredths back of Egor Kornev (10.84), and then rocketed off the turn en route to winning gold and breaking the world record with a second 25 split of 11.17.
Coetze’s time breaks Kliment Kolesnikov‘s four-year-old world record of 22.11, takes down Kornev’s week-old World Cup Record of 22.23, and breaks his own Commonwealth, African and South African Record of 22.51, which was also set last week in Baku.
Kornev was just six one-hundredths off his newly minted best time to snag silver in 22.29, while Pavel Samusenko, who tied with Coetze for silver last week, won bronze in 22.35 to improve on his PB by two one-hundredths.
