So much for the optimism expressed all week. The throwing sessions/medical re-evaluations for Cade Horton must not have gone well, because he’s going on the Injured List, and will now definitely miss the Wild Card Series against the Padres.
There are going to be some conspiracy theories flying about what the Cubs knew and when they knew it, but I’ll just say up front that I tend to think the most likely explanation is the simplest one: the Cubs and Cade Horton knew something was a little wrong, but they were hoping he’d feel good and safe enough to pitch through it. They were guilty of optimism.
So, yeah, this really sucks: Horton goes on the Injured List today with a non-displaced rib fracture (sometimes they are really subtle on MRIs), and Jordan Wicks returns to take his spot on the roster.
Horton would be eligible to return – if able – in 12 days. That means the Wild Card Series is totally out. No Cade Horton for that series at all. He would next be eligible to pitch – if the Cubs make it this far and if necessary – in Game 5 of the NLDS.
This is a terribly-timed, brutal blow to the Cubs’ playoff hopes.
