As you can tell from the headline, it’s a little difficult to discern exactly how we should feel about the update on Cade Horton’s back issue post-MRI, at least from the initial wave of quotes trickling out.
See for yourself:
Counsell said as the days go on they will continue to gather more information and see where they are at. t.co/Yiv4oRA1I4
— Josh Frydman (@Josh_Frydman) September 25, 2025Craig Counsell said Cade Horton “is on track still.”Horton is optimistic he can pitch, but he’ll throw tomorrow and they’ll get more input from another physician before knowing for sure.
— Andy Martínez (@amartinez_11) September 25, 2025So, Horton can throw. That’s good. He’s “on track,” though that’s kinda non-specific. They need another physician’s opinion, but they’re not shutting him down. But they also want to gather more information as the days go by and see where they are at.
Mostly good news there, relative to our deepest darkest fears, perhaps, but also still a little uncertain. I don’t think we can totally breathe a sigh of relief, and probably won’t until and unless he’s actually back on the mound pitching in a game.
My best guess there based on the quotes and the circumstances is that the MRI must’ve either shown a little something, or simply been inconclusive (the readings aren’t also as precise as you’d hope for, especially when you have to sort them out in relation to the symptoms a guy is or isn’t feeling). So maybe there is a bit of an open question about how and when Horton will be able to go at his full-competitive/full-effective level? Maybe that’s why he has to throw and get another physician’s opinion from there?
I suppose this turns into a bit more of a waiting game. Cade Horton will throw tomorrow, and then there will be another evaluation of where things stand. The Cubs have the benefit of holding Horton until Game 2 of the Wild Card Series on Wednesday, if that helps, or even Game 3 if they have to (not ideal, but better than nothing). From there, maybe it’s an NLDS or bust situation? But at least, for now, he’s not shut down. That’s a start, and I’ll take it for today.
