CUBS LINEUP — The Padres are off tonight, so the Cubs will not be able to clinch the top Wild Card spot even with a win. They can, however, bring their WC1 magic number down to 1, which would allow them to clinch tomorrow afternoon against the Cardinals during a 1:20 start at Wrigley Field. And I think that would be just swell. So let’s win tonight, Cubs, and celebrate tomorrow, eh?
Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the finale against the Mets.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Moises Ballesteros, DH Seiya Suzuki, RF Carson Kelly, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dansby Swanson, SS Matt Shaw, 3BNo big surprises in the Cubs lineup tonight, with Kyle Tucker still out and Carson Kelly getting regular work behind the plate.
Busch is still up top, Happ and Ballesteros are in the middle, and PCA is down at seventh.
Win tonight to check the final regular-season box tomorrow. Go Cubs.
New York Mets Lineup:
Francisco Lindor, SS Juan Soto, RF Pete Alonso, 1B Mark Vientos, DH Brandon Nimmo, LF Luis Torrens, C Brett Baty, 3B Tyrone Taylor, CF Luisangel Acuña, 2BPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Shota Imanaga, LHP
Tonight will make the 25th and final start of Shota Imanaga’s sophomore season in the states. And while he wasn’t nearly as good as he was last year, Imanaga still managed to post a 3.37 ERA over 139.0 IP (+ whatever happens tonight). We’ll do a full season round-up sometime after the playoffs, but in general, Imanaga continued to limit the walks (4.6 BB%) and hits (.210 AVG against), while the hard contact and barrels shot up a bit.
Even still, if he has a dominant run in the playoffs, none of that will matter. His most important innings are ahead of him, and that may be especially true given the looming Cade Horton news.
New York Mets: Nolan McLean, RHP
Nolan McLean has been a groundball machine through seven big league starts this season (64.1%), which, combined with the wind blowing in tonight, does not make for an ideal power outing. The Cubs will have to string together hits and steal bases if they want to score a bunch off him. And they’ll have to guard against the strikeout, because he’s been pretty good about that too: 27.9%
