Arne Slot‘s side have won every single game this season so far, and they’ll hope to continue that streak against Southampton.

Championship side Saints have made a poor start to their season, sitting 18th in the second tier following relegation.

    Liverpool vs Southampton: Team news

Liverpool will rotate after a busy week of action, which included two league games and a Champions League opener.

Slot could hand a second start in a Reds shirt for Alexander Isak, with young star Rio Ngumoha sure for a start too.

Wataru Endo, Giovanni Leoni, Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili may also be brought into the line-up.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ibrahima Konate and Ryan Gravenberch are already confirmed to be sitting out.

As for Southampton, they may keep a strong side out to try and compete with one of the best teams in the world.

After starting on the bench at the weekend, Adam Armstrong, Cameron Archer and Flynn Downes could feature.

    Liverpool vs Southampton: Pre-match stats

Liverpool have won each of their last eight home games against Southampton across all competitions by an aggregate score of 25-2 – their last defeat at Anfield to the Saints came in a 1-0 League Cup semi-final second leg loss in 2016-17. Southampton were eliminated by Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the League Cup last season – they have never exited the competition at the hands of the same club in back-to-back editions. Liverpool have progressed from each of their last six League Cup third round ties (W5 D1), last failing to make the fourth round in 2018-19 when they were beaten 2-1 at Anfield by eventual runners-up Chelsea. Southampton are aiming to reach the fourth round of the League Cup for the fourth time in the last five seasons, while the Saints have progressed from each of their last four third round ties against Premier League opposition, beating Everton on penalties at this stage last season.

Liverpool vs Southampton: What has been said?

After reaching the final last season, Slot has similar cup ambitions for Liverpool despite using the games to rotate his squad.

He said: “Last season we reached the final with these [changed] line-ups and there’s no trophy we underestimate, we always want to win every trophy we compete for.

“That’s the good thing about the quality of the squad we have, that we still have a very good team that we can play tomorrow.

“But we have to think about the long term as well.

“If we want to compete in every single trophy, then some players need a normal week, which is not playing during the week once in a while as well.

“That’s managing a team throughout the whole season with trying to compete at every level we are competing for.”
