East Injury News, Plenty of Interesting Role Players, Windy City Promotional Schedule, and Other Bulls Bullets

I went to Illinois. My wife went to Indiana. It’s a tense day in the Schuster household. As much as I want to smack-talk, the last thing I want to do is jinx anything.

Oh, and I also don’t want to sleep on the couch.

Eastern Conference teams got some surprising news on Friday morning. Tyler Herro will be sidelined for an extended period of time after suffering an injury in offseason workouts. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the guard will undergo foot surgery and spend at least two months on the sideline. This puts him on track to return near the end of November, which also happens to be when the Chicago Bulls will face the Heat for the first time. Their first matchup is scheduled for November 21. Could this end up being Herro’s return game? If not, the Bulls will almost surely catch him later on, as their next three battles aren’t until 2026. To be clear, the Heat were not expected to enter the season as some sort of juggernaut. The franchise is in a transitional phase, and most project them to be in the Play-In mix again this year. However, it’s hard not to wonder what removing Herro early on could mean for their season as a whole. If they have trouble staying afloat, could they look to enter the tank race? And, if so, might this just open up more room for the Bulls to climb the standings? While I went with Isaac Okoro for the Bulls, I think they have more options than most teams. Kevin Huerter showed signs of returning to form last season, and his elite shooting stroke could fit in perfectly with how we know this Bulls team wants to play. Zach Collins was downright dominant during his stint as a starter last year, and his more physical play defensively played a role in the 15-5 finish. The Bulls also prioritized Tre Jones’ return for a reason. He is a highly efficient facilitator who came through in the clutch multiple times down the stretch. And don’t forget about Ayo Dosunmu! The guard played his best basketball yet last season, and he is entering a contract year. Heck, even Dalen Terry is a dark-horse candidate. As much as he’s struggled to find his footing thus far, he flashed some signs of life as a high-energy perimeter defender last season. Look, I think we all know the Bulls may not be very good this year, but this is why I’m still looking forward to tuning in. The supporting cast is more interesting than it’s been in years, and it comes at a time when the front office has some big decisions to make. Who can prove they are worth a new deal next summer? Who might emerge as a valuable trade chip at the deadline? I have re-watched this Derrick Rose dagger a million times. The crowd reaction says it all. Yes, I know it was an easy day trip for Chicago fans, but few players in NBA history could completely enchant a road arena like Rose.
