Mötley Crüe frontman Vince Neil is revealing the devastating health issues that forced the band to postpone their residency last year.
The beloved hair metal rocker, 64, who rose to superstardom in the '80s alongside original bandmates Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, and Mick Mars, opened up in a new interview about the difficult journey to recovery he's been on in the last year.
“I had a stroke,” Neil told the Las Vegas Review-Journal from Los Angeles, where he was rehearsing for the band's upcoming residency at Dolby Live. “My whole left side went out.”

Neil went on to say that he felt fine when he went to sleep Christmas night. However, the incident hit him in his sleep. When he woke up, it was as if his body had stayed asleep. At the time, the band said Neil had to cancel shows to undergo a “required medical procedure.” However, the public had no idea how significant the scare was. The first part of the residency was canceled.
“I had to learn to walk again, and that was tough,” Neil continued. “The doctors said they didn’t think I’d be able to go back on stage again. I go, ‘No, no, I’m gonna do it. Watch and see.’”
Vince Neil's Recovery Period
The recovery period was particularly strenuous for Neil.
“I went from people carrying me to the bathroom, because I couldn’t walk myself, finally to a wheelchair,” Neil shared. “I graduated to a walker, and then I had a cane. Now I don’t need anything. But it’s like a full-time job getting back to where you feel good again.”
He went on to say that his singing voice wasn't affected, luckily. However, it did take him some time to adjust.
“It takes a while to get your brain to start moving your legs, for them to do what your brain wants to do. You try to walk but it doesn’t come out right,” he added.
A strong fitness regimen has been key. Months of physical therapy, as well as “ladder” agility drills run by a local football coach, got Neil back into shape.
“I’ve been doing that a lot, a lot of running — I learned how to run again,” Neil shared. “It’s been tough, but I’m back, I’m 90-, 95-percent to where I was before, and it’s going to be great.”
