Actress Annabeth Gish is mourning the death of her beloved father, Robert Franklin Gish, who passed away at the age of 85 on September 1. The Mystic Pizzastar calls the grief she feels “a wild kind,” that runs deep.
Gish, 54, shared an open, honest, and raw tribute to her father, whom she credits with inspiring much of her own sensibilities.
“Robert Franklin Gish 4/1/1940-9/1/2025.My father passed this week. He was surrounded by his wife of 65 years, his three children, and some of his 7 grandchildren. There was music, laughter, love and tears as he died. He greatly impacted many people with his keen intellectual mind, his jovial personality, his love of literature spanning the canon to his specialty in Native American/Chicano lit. He authored over 17 books, both fiction and non-fiction. He was a Distinguished Scholar and Professor Emeritus. Dad loved nothing more than his native New Mexico, walking with his dogs and bird friends along the bosque, among the river reeds and the sprawling cottonwoods. He loved jazz guitar and had the purest tenor voice when he sang. He loved my mother and they spent an entire lifetime in their togetherness. I owe much of who I am to his sensibilities. This grief is a wild kind, foreign and tender. Father/daughter love runs deep, and our relationship has been, at times, so overwhelmingly complicated. But abiding, enduring, stunningly significant. Thank you, Dad. I love you. You remain in so many pieces of us. Rest in peace.”

Is Annabeth Gish Related to Lillian Gish?
Ever since Annabeth Gish burst onto the Hollywood scene alongside Julia Roberts and Lili Taylor in Mystic Pizza, movie fans assumed she was related to silent film star Lillian Gish. Despite the shared last name, however, Annabeth Gish is not related to the famed Gish sisters.
Annabeth did, however, write a letter to Lillian Gish upon first arriving in Hollywood. The silent screen legend did write back, but her advice was less than encouraging.
She wrote, “Stay in a place where you are loved and supported. There’s too much talent and not enough work in the movies!”
Thankfully, Annabeth Gish didn’t take Lillian Gish’s advice to heart. From Mystic Pizza to creating a longstanding résumé of work, Annabeth Gish has created a decades-long career in film and television, including work in Beautiful Girls and Nixon, that surely made her father proud until his last days.
