Who Went Home in The Great British Baking Show 2025 Premiere?

The Great British Baking Showkicked off its 16th season in the most epic of ways on Friday, Sept. 5, with a cheeky sketch from the show's judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, as well as hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding. However, it wasn't their silly antics fans were tuning in to watch (though they did elicit a chuckle), but rather the baking skills of the 12 contestants competing to be crowned Britain's best amateur baker in 2025.

There are 10 episodes in the season (or collection, as the Brits like to call it), with a new one dropping on Netflix every Friday from Sept. 5 through the finale in November. So who went home first in the season premiere? Let's dig in, but first be warned—there are spoilers ahead.

With the season kicking of in typical Great British Baking Show-style serving up Cake Week, the 12 contestants had three challenges to complete, all in an effort to deliver that perfect, eye-catching sponge. Here's how it went down.

Sadly, it was 30-year-old analytical research and development scientist Hassan who failed to impress the judges in the season premiere in order to continue on in the competition. His Swiss Roll in the first challenge fell flat (literally), and the Fondant Fancies involved in the technical challenge didn't help Hassan's case either.

"I think I'm a bit upset," he said in his exit interview from the competition. "I didn't expect it, though. Everyone's a really, really phenomenal baker, and they're all such lovely people. Even though it's been a short-lived experience, I've enjoyed it. Hopefully, I can reflect on some things and maybe get back to baking when I get a chance."

Who won Star Baker in The Great British Baking Show 2025 premiere?

    Nataliia

The Star Baker title for the premiere episode went to 30-year-old office assistant Nataliia. Born in Ukraine, she leaned heavily into her roots to create a stunning landscape cake that was an ode to her birth country in the final challenge. It impressed the judges for both its visually appealing design and exquisite taste.

For Sept. 5's Cake Week episode, contestants were first tasked with making the perfect Swiss Roll with an inlay design and not one, but two fillings. The second was a technical challenge crafted by Hollywood and Leith involving Fondant Fancies, with a few ingredient curveballs thrown in (like what to do with those crushed almonds). And, finally, the bakers were asked to bake and design a landscape cake, which some took more literally than others.
