Carlos Santana was one of the big-name players on the 2016 Cleveland team that lost to the Cubs in the World Series, so it’s just as wild to see him now on the Cubs as it was to see Jason Kipnis – wilder, really, because it’s so much further away. He’s hoping the Cubs can give him a shot at winning the championship he missed out on with Cleveland because of the Cubs. “(I have) hope for a championship,” Santana said of why he signed with the Cubs, per Marquee. “So, before I retire, I want to make it (happen) …. First thing is, it was a dream when I was a kid to play at Wrigley Field. Everybody knows the story … 2016 (World Series) when I played with Cleveland …. That’s why I’m making this decision to come here. I’m happy. You know, it’s a lot of memories. This is one of my dreams, (winning) a championship.” We immediately saw one benefit of having Santana available on the bench: it allows Craig Counsell to pinch-hit for Michael Busch with Justin Turner later in a game (since he’s going to do that anyway), but then ALSO swap in Santana for Turner, either immediately or as a subsequent pinch-hitter, to still have a good glove at first base for the late innings. Santana might also have some defensive tips for Busch, who is quite good at first base, but also still quite new to the position. Making the Santana deal official, by the way, required a 40-man spot, which the Cubs opened up by designated utility infielder Ben Cowles for assignment. You may remember that he, together with reliever Jack Neely, was the return in the Mark Leiter Jr. trade last summer. Neely has been hurt and ineffective this year, and Cowles has been pretty bad at the plate overall at Triple-A. The Cubs will presumably try to get Cowles through waivers and outright him to Iowa, which, in his case, would allow them to keep him for another year on a minor league deal. As for the Owen Caissie-Kevin Alcantara swap, Craig Counsell and Jed Hoyer explained that it was simply a matter of wanting Caissie to get regular starts again at Triple-A, and for now preferring Alcantara’s ability to play center field and bat righty. It could allow them to start him sometimes against lefties and give Pete Crow-Armstrong a breather. © Allan Henry-Imagn Images Not that you would want to give PCA too much time off, as he showed again yesterday with another incredible catch, but he could almost certainly use some days to rest and recalibrate. After a brutal August at the plate, here’s what Jed Hoyer said about PCA: “I see a guy that’s just struggling and is a little bit frustrated as he works through it,” Hoyer said, per Marquee. “I was just watching him hit in the cage right now, he’s certainly putting the work in to find it. The hope is that it clicks here in the next month. Not entirely surprising, guys have ups and downs. He really didn’t have any downs [in the first half] …. Hoping to give Pete some more days off, and you want him fresh and playing well. So that was the mindset …. I think he struggles and he still, every day, helps us win games. His defense is just unbelievable. And I think that as I talk about our pitching staff, I think a huge part of that is our defense. Not saying the Nationals and Marlins should’ve been a little more reasonable at the trade deadline, but I am certainly saying that I’m all the more glad the Cubs didn’t go way over the top with their offers. Can you imagine if they sent Cade Horton and/or Matt Shaw in a package for one of these guys and they immediately broke (while the other two exploded)? Speaking of injuries, new Brewers reliever Shelby Miller felt something pop in his elbow in yesterday’s loss to the Phillies. That’s never good. And speaking further of injuries that could impact NL playoff races, the Padres lost stud reliever (and former Cub, ditto with Miller actually) Jason Adam to a quad tendon rupture, which seems bad. He had to be carted off the field, so I presume his season is over. The Padres, who are chasing the Cubs for the top Wild Card spot, are also already without Xander Bogaerts, and have Fernando Tatis Jr. dealing with a hamstring issue.
