‘I felt discombobulated’ – Emotional Coco Gauff opens up on crushing Naomi Osaka loss at US Open

Coco Gauff remained surprisingly bullish in the aftermath of her US Open exit.

The world No.3 was dumped out of the tournament on Monday in a surprise 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Naomi Osaka.

Gauff faced criticism over her fairly flat performance, but in the aftermath of the loss passionately defended herself.

Gauff delivered an honest reflection in her post-match press conference, telling the media that she puts too much pressure on herself.

“I feel like I put so much pressure on myself at my age, at 21,” Gauff said.

“I realized how much the girls on tour are being successful at 25, 26, at those ages. So I think for me it just gets me excited to realize if.

“I have four more years of working as hard as I am right now and actually doing the right things, where my game could be.

“It has obviously improved in the last four years from four years ago to now. So I think if I can make that same jump of improvement, it’s a lot to be excited for in the future.”

Gauff’s nerves exploited by Osaka in US Open defeat

The pressure that Gauff describes inevitably leads to nerves, and it’s something Osaka took advantage of from the beginning of the match.

Gauff’s 11 unforced errors handed the four-time Grand Slam champion the first set.

Despite the 25,000 crowd attempting to spur her on, nothing could stop Gauff from exiting the tournament.

“I felt so discombobulated on the court, because I was serving well but not returning well. The last two years, everybody can agree that’s like a weird thought,” said Gauff.

“I think there’s a lot of positives to take from this tournament and I’m trying to be positive.

It’s been a US Open to forget for Gauff

Gauff’s game has looked uncertain all tournament

Since her historic French Open victory, Gauff has struggled to build any consistency on tour.

A round one exit at Wimbledon was followed by early exits in Montreal and Cincinnati.

Then, just days before the start of the US Open, the 21-year-old hired a new coach, Gavin MacMillan, to address the glaring issues with her serve.

While the double faults decreased, Gauff got off to a slow start in New York.

It took her three sets to get past Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round before edging past Donna Vekic in the second, which featured a highly charged tiebreak.

While her win against Magdalena French was stress-free, it was obvious she still wasn’t playing her best tennis.

So it’s unsurprising that Osaka was able to defeat Gauff, especially considering the wave of momentum she is on.

Osaka recently reached the final in Montreal, losing to Victoria Mboko, and is enjoying the fruits of having new coach in Tomasz Wiktorowski in her box.

However, what many didn’t expect was the manner in which Gauff fell to Osaka.

“Coco is one of the best players in the world. I have the most fun when I play against the best players. I always see it as a challenge. I like challenges,” said Osaka.

“These are the moments that I play tennis for.”

Gauff’s exit also means she has suffered back-to-back fourth-round losses at the US Open.

The last time she got past that stage was in 2023, when she won the tournament.
