The first installment of the Chicago Bears injury report ahead of the team’s Week 17 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers is here. I have some mixed feelings about what the first release looks like, but we can start with the good news accompanying wide receiver Luther Burden III.
Burden, who missed Saturday’s Week 16 win against the Green Bay Packers was limited in Wednesdays’ practice at Halas Hall. The rookie wideout missed all of the team’s practice sessions last week because of an ankle injury. An upgrade from not practicing at all to doing so in a limited capacity isn’t much, but it still counts as a step in the right direciton.
The Mizzou product has 36 catches, 479 receiving yards, and one touchdown in 13 games this season. Burden’s last game was his best as a pro as he snagged six catches (on seven targets) and racked up 84 receiving yards. It would be nice to have him back for Week 17. We’ll monitor his status closely in the coming days.

YIKES! Six players missed practice, including three (wide receiver Devin Duvernay, linebacker D’Marco Jackson, and defensive back Nick McCloud) who sat out due to an illness. Unfortunately, ’tis the season for bugs to make their way around buildings. While Luther Burden III received an upgrade on the Bears injury report, fellow wide receiver Rome Odunze remained sidelined with a foot injury. For what it’s worth, it sounds like Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is holding out hope that Odunze can return this season. Joining Odunze in missing practice due to an injury was linebacker T.J. Edwards (glute). It has been an injury riddled season for Edwards, whose third-down stop of Packers quarterback Malik Willis in overtime set up the fourth-down stand that ultimately led to the game-winning touchdown.A NEW EPISODE OF THE BN BEARS PODCAST IS HERE: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
The following players joined burden in being limited on Wednesday: Safety Kevin Byard III (ankle), center Drew Dalman (ankle, hand), defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson (knee), running back Travis Homer (ankle), linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga (hamstring), cornerback Nahshon Wright (hamstring). Hopefully, we’ll see some of those limited players get upgraded before the end of the week. One last note: Offensive lineman Luke Newman has been designated to return from injured reserve as the Bears opened his 21-day practice window. Newman suffered a foot injury a few weeks ago. And while Chicago’s offensive line hasn’t needed him, it would be nice to have more beef among the depth players along the offensive line. We’ll have another Bears injury report for you on Christmas Day. Sorry, that’s all I can afford for you in terms of gifts at this time.
