The Denver Nuggets have been relatively quiet in free agency thus far, but they’re still making moves.
After reportedly agreeing to minimum contracts with point guard Tyus Jones and big man Marvin Bagley III, the Nuggets have extended their search overseas to find defensive impact.
According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Nuggets are signing Euroleague wing Alpha Diallo to a one-year contract.
EuroLeague Defender of the Year Alpha Diallo has agreed to a one-year, $1.4 million deal to sign with the Denver Nuggets, agents Jared Mucha and Javon Phillips of Excel Sports Management tell ESPN. Diallo, 29, has played for AS Monaco in the Euroleague for the past few seasons as a versatile wing defender. Last season, he earned the honor of Best Defender of 2025-26, as voted on by Euroleague coaches. Diallo averaged the 10th most minutes per game in the league and tied for the league lead with 1.4 steals per game.
Diallo was a four-year college player at Providence through the 2019-20 season before taking his talents overseas. This will be his first year in the NBA.
Several former NBA prospects played in the Euroleague this past year such as Talen Horton-Tucker, Isaac Bonga, Frank Ntilikina, and Trey Lyles among others. Diallo was voted the best defender of them all, using an athletic, powerful build to blitz ball handlers, read passing lanes, rotate over from the weak side, and hustle in transition. Diallo certainly made an impact, and given his physicality, he has an opportunity to see those skills translate to the NBA game.
In terms of his offense, Diallo is a slasher and cutter, often attacking the basket whenever he can. He isn’t a great three-point shooter, and that may affect the total minutes he’s able to play as a complementary wing at the NBA level. Still, running hard in transition, cutting, setting screens, and having a high work rate can go a long way in Denver’s offense based around Nikola Jokic. If that’s all Diallo provides, he can still be a helpful contributor.
For the Nuggets, Diallo makes 12 unofficial players the Nuggets have on their full-time roster at this current point. Tyus Jones, Marvin Bagley, rookie Trevon Brazile, and now Alpha Diallo. The Nuggets aren’t exactly making flashy moves, but they’re hoping to find value in unique places to fill out a very expensive roster.
Denver’s obvious financial limitations are causing Denver’s delays in filling out the rest of their roster, but expect both Peyton Watson and Spencer Jones to factor into Denver’s plans in some way, shape, or form if the Nuggets can afford them. Bruce Brown, Jalen Pickett, and David Roddy are also Nuggets that remain unsigned in unrestricted free agency.
It’s unclear how aggressive the Nuggets will be on the trade front, but if the Nuggets do end up re-signing Peyton Watson to the contract his representation desires, they remain in line to fork over one of the largest luxury tax bills in NBA history. Until that situation clears up, the Nuggets will still have questions to answer about their roster and plans for the 2026-27 season.
