Lauren Wedeking from Lexington, Kentucky, has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Akron, beginning in the 2027-28 school year. She is the first publicized commitment to Akron’s class of 2031.
She confirmed the news in an email to SwimSwam, and on Instagram, writing:
I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Akron! Thank you to all of my family, friends and coaches, especially Coach Devin for supporting me throughout this process. Finally, thank you to Coach Brian and the rest of the Akron coaching staff for this amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to join this amazing team!! Go Zips!!!

100 Freestyle: 52.74 200 Freestyle: 1:51.79 500 Freestyle: 4:59.81 100 Butterfly: 57.13 200 Butterfly: 2:04.75 200 IM: 2:05.47 400 IM: 4:27.23A junior at Lafayette High School, Wedeking has swum on the varsity team since her freshman year and trains year-round with Kentucky Aquatics. A versatile threat in the pool, she’s currently strong across the 100, 200, and 500 free, butterfly, and IM events, though she has yet to find her true niche.
The future Zip has steadily dropped time year over year throughout her career. Her personal bests in the 200 IM (2:05.47), 200 fly (2:04.75), and 500 free (4:59.81) all came at Sectionals in March, her first time qualifying for the meet. There, she placed fifth in the 500 free, ninth in the 200 fly, 12th in the 200 IM, 13th in the 400 IM, 17th in the 200 free, and 21st in the 100 free.
Just this month, she threw down PBs at a local club meet, the NAC Timedrop Music City Invitational, posting times of 52.74 in the 100 free, 1:51.79 in the 200 free, 57.13 in the 100 fly, and 4:27.23 in the 400 IM.
Through her first two high school seasons, Wedeking has made an impact at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) State meet. As a freshman, she touched fifth in the 500 free and sixth in the 200 IM. This past season, she finished sixth in the 200 free and seventh in the 500 free.
Akron won its fourth consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship in 2025; it was the program’s 11th title in the past 12 seasons. The MAC only scores two finals, but Wedeking’s times would already add to the Zips’ total in the ‘B’ finals of the 200 fly, 400 IM, and 500 free, while she’s not far off the 2:05.28 and 1:51.26 required in the 200 IM and 200 free. Times of 52.74 and 55.30 were needed to earn a second swim in the 100 free and 100 fly, respectively.
On the team’s 2024-25 depth chart, Wedeking would have ranked fourth in the 400 IM, fifth in the 500 free, seventh in the 200 fly, ninth in the 200 IM, 10th in the 200 free, 12th in the 100 fly, and 17th in the 100 free.
With a year and a half to continue improving, she will arrive on campus as an immediate conference scorer and dual meet weapon across multiple events. If she can drop more time in the 200 free, she could also bolster the 800 free relay.
