Iga Swiatek booked her place in the US Open quarter-finals and toasted the occasion… with her phone.
The Pole eased into the last eight in style against Ekaterina Alexandrova with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in just 61 minutes.
But the world No.2 seed appeared otherwise engaged in some personal business as she walked up to conduct her on-court interview.

Once the text dialogue was all said and done, Swiatek revealed why she was so quick to open her phone.
The six-time Grand Slam winner was asked: “Iga, we are about to talk about this match you played, but first, do you have any interest in telling us who that text message was going to?”
Swiatek replied with a smile: “Oh, just my coach. Yeah, I asked him to book, like, 10 minutes of a practice court if it’s possible.”
Swiatek’s urgency to get back on the practice court is a sign that she is ready to do whatever it takes to land her second US Open title following her success in 2022.
The Pole quickly got into her stride against Alexandrova, firing 21 winners while winning every point when coming forward to the net.
And it was a performance that appeared to please the 2025 Wimbledon champion.
“I would say [I was happy with] the intensity and the focus because, for sure, at the beginning I felt like, I don’t know, like she played really fast and also the court is a bit different, so I wanted to find my rhythm,” she said
“But later on, I really went in my bubble and in the zone and sometimes I was making, like, risky decisions and I think I forced the ball to go in, so I’m just happy with the quality and with my serve as well.”

This summer’s Wimbledon triumph has shown that she is conquering her grass game.
When asked which is her favoured surface to play on, Swiatek replied: “Well, now I like all of them! Which is weird.
“But for sure, the clay court season has always been my favourite but people make it really hard for me, you know, with all the pressure around.
“So I think sometimes it’s just easier to enjoy the surfaces where it’s harder to play but you have more kind of freedom to just make mistakes and accept them.

Next up for Switek will be either Amanda Anisimova or Beatriz Haddad Maia for a place in the semi-finals.
