A powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistanovernight, killing at least 250 people and injuring around 500, authoritiessaid on Monday.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS)reported the 6.0-magnitude quake occurred 27 kilometers (17 miles) east ofJalalabad in Nangahar province at a shallow depth of 8 kilometers (5 miles).The tremor, which struck around midnight local time, was followed by at leastfive aftershocks measuring between 4.5 and 5.2.
The USGS PAGER system issued an orange alert,warning of significant human and economic losses; however, relief efforts havebeen slowed by landslides.
