Gerhardt Hoover has verbally committed to join the University of Virginia’s swim and dive Class of 2030. Primarily a breaststroker and IMer, Hoover will make the move to Charlottesville from Scituate, Massachusetts.

Hoover competes for the Boston-based Commonwealth Swimming, where he’s become one of the top 2026 graduates in New England. He has attended a number of elite meets, including U.S. Nationals and Junior Nationals, preparing him for UVA’s intense ACC competition.
In short course, Hoover’s best results came from the Ithaca Sectionals meet in March. Hoover pulled off a triple win in the 200 breaststroke (1:56.27), 400 IM (3:49.55), and 200 IM (1:46.87). Additionally, he placed second in the 100 breast (54.20) and participated in three victorious freestyle relays. His freestyle splits were 20.85/44.47/1:40.65, the former a lead-off.
More recently, Hoover made two A final appearances at Junior Nationals in the 200 breast (2:15.65) and the 200 (2:02.54), the latter a 3rd place effort. He also finished 9th in the 400 IM with a 4:23.67.
At U.S. Nationals in June, Hoover took on the three breaststroke events. He turned in 29.26/ 1:03.34/2:16.10, finaling in all three.

200 breast — 1:56.27 100 breast — 54.20 400 IM — 3:49.55 200 IM — 1:46.87Though Hoover’s times are not yet ACC finalist level, he will still be an important addition to the Cavalier’s breaststroke squad. Before Hoover steps on to campus, last season’s top Cavalier breaststrokers Noah Nichols, Matthew Styczen, and Matthew Heilman, will all be gone. Class of 2029 commit Chris Smith, who finaled in the 50 breaststroke at the 2025 World Championships, does not appear on the university’s roster site for this year. Charlottesville will need Hoover to help plug its breaststroke vacancy.
Moreover, it’s worth noting the strides Hoover made during his junior year. His 200 breaststroke improved by 3.5 seconds and his 100 breast by over a second. In the IMs, he shaved 3 and 6 seconds respectively off his 200 and 400 times compared to the previous season.
Other swimmers headed to UVA in the fall of 2026 include Nathan Carr, Micah Davis, and Ian Heysen Ricci.
