The bats didn’t obliterate Kyle Hendricks or anything, but he certainly didn’t hold them down. Just too much contact, as was the case in his later days with the Cubs, and sometimes that’s going to push across some runs.
Jameson Taillon was fantastic for five smooth innings – he’s the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game – and needed just 62 pitches to do it. I can understand, with an off-day tomorrow and a well-rested bullpen, why Craig Counsell pulled him there. Taillon is still coming back from his injury, and you want to make sure he’s as fresh as possible for the stretch run.
Of note about the bullpen covering the final four innings, a rare Dansby Swanson error made this one much closer than it needed to be. Not pinning that one on Andrew Kittredge, alone.
Another strong game from Kyle Tucker, which is such a relief. Things really might be good there.
