Preseason or not, the Chicago Bears put an absolute shellacking on the Buffalo Bills. It was thorough and enjoyable. Let’s discuss.
FINAL: Chicago Bears 38, Buffalo Bills 0 (ESPN Box Score)
Thoughts on the Bears’ preseason win vs. the Bills
I know better than to put too much stock into a preseason game. But two weeks in, and I am still liking what I am seeing. The most notable thing to me is that the players aren’t making the type of mistakes in preseason games that make me go “thank goodness it is still the preseason.” Don’t get it twisted. There is still clean up to do there because there always is, but not seeing silly and preventable mistakes plague a preseason game was refreshing. Even though top running backs D’Andre Swift, Roschon Johnson, and Kyle Monangai didn’t suit up and get in, it was nice to see the running backs who did suit up take advantage of the extra playing time. Making the most of the opportunities that are presented is what the preseason is all about. It makes for a fun story when someone like Brittain Brown joins the Bears at the start of the week, then ends it with 16 carries, 73 rushing yards, and a touchdown. There is nothing wrong with enjoying that performance. I wanted someone to stand out in the left tackle competition tonight. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Perhaps I will feel differently after I sleep on it. The injury bug is getting to be a lot to handle right now. Cornerback Terell Smith, defensive end Austin Booker, and wide receiver JP Richardson were among the Bears players who left Sunday’s preseason win against the Bills early due to their respective injuries. We will be monitoring the news on that front and will share updates as they become available.Bears preseason highlights
Another batch of highlights from preseason action.
It was wonderful seeing Caleb Williams and Cole Kmet hook up for a chunk play on the opening drive: twitter.com/ChicagoBears/status/1957234551412949096 It wasn’t just QB1 getting highlights. Tyson Bagent got in on the fun with this throw to Tyler Scott, who played like someone who knows his job is hanging in the balance (which was nice to see after his snafu on the opening kick): twitter.com/ChicagoBears/status/1957249201810690166 Ain’t no fun if the defense can’t get none (or whatever Snoop Dogg sang…) twitter.com/ChicagoBears/status/1957271741576720834 twitter.com/ChicagoBears/status/1957250438534778886 twitter.com/ChicagoBears/status/1957247372276187592Three Bears
Caleb Williams — QB1 looked sharp from the get-go. Yes, a large chunk of his production came on that first drive. But it was a darn good look at what we hope is a glimpse of things to come for him in this offense. Williams completed 6 of 10 passes, threw for 107 yards, tossed a touchdown, and finished the night with a 130.0 passer rating. He threw with conviction and accuracy. I hope this is the version of Caleb that we get when games matter in the standings starting in September.
Luther Burden III — The rookie receiver finished with three catches and 49 receiving yards, but it was the blocks he delivered in goal-line situations to spring some touchdown runs that caught the eyes of fans, followers, and others on social media. Burden plays with the type of aggression you would expect from a player who is miffed about being a second-round pick. Please carry that energy into the regular season and beyond.
Ian Wheeler — On the one hand, I am irked that the Bears’ running game is still a major question mark at this point in the summer. But on the other hand, I enjoy seeing these bottom-of-the-roster backs get some shine. And it was nice to see Wheeler come away with two rushing scores to go along with 80 rushing yards on 19 carries. It is enjoyable to see underdog stories step up in moments like these. May they help him land a roster spot, if not here, then somewhere.
