Mitch Trubisky Has Some Advice For Caleb Williams

Mitch Trubisky being back in Chicago this week isn’t anything like the return of a prodigal son.

However, Trubisky’s return to Halas Hall for Friday’s joint practice between his current team (the Buffalo Bills) and his former team (the Chicago Bears) allowed for the quarterback to share some pearls of wisdom for Caleb Williams.

“It is a fishbowl,” Trubisky said, via the Chicago Tribune. “But at the same time, I would say, enjoy it. Take it all in. I only had it for four years. I wish I had it for longer, to be honest. So take it in. Enjoy the process. All eyes are on you in the city. But it’s really a privilege. There’s a lot of pressure that comes with that. But it’s a privilege. I miss that. It’s a lot of fun to be the franchise guy, especially in a city like this. I would say to have fun with it and enjoy the process.”

The fishbowl comp from Mitch Trubisky is spot on. I couldn’t have made a better comparison if I tried.

Mitch Trubisky remembers his time with the Bears fondly

Let me be clear from the top. I am not here to relitigate the Mitch Trubisky era. Trubisky did not live up to the expectations that came with being the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. However, I am here to talk through the past, make a connection to the present, and look to the future. That Trubisky views his time with the Bears in a positive light shows a great amount of growth and maturity that I imagine comes with making the rounds after leaving Chicago. Trubisky is in his second stint with the Bills after spending a couple of years with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

There aren’t too many teammates who are still around from his days in Chicago. Tight end Cole Kmet, kicker Cairo Santos, and Pro Bowl Cornerback Jaylon Johnson are the only remaining players from that 2020 Bears team that Trubisky helped lead to the playoffs as the first-ever No. 7-seed wild-card team. But there is no one left from the 2018 squad that won 12 games and the NFC North that season. That squad was the last great Bears team we’ve seen around here. And that Mitch Trubisky remembers that team the same way I do gives me warm and fuzzy feelings:

“It felt like we couldn’t lose,” Trubisky said. “We just had a really good team. It was one of the most fun years of football I ever had. I’ll always remember that and all my teammates from that year. It was a great run.”

DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN ROQUAN SMITH PICKED OFF MITCH TRUBISKY?

The 2018 Bears were a wrecking ball. That team had four first-team All-Pros (safety Eddie Jackson, cornerback Kyle Fuller, edge defender Khalil Mack, and return specialist Tarik Cohen) and a wave of Pro Bowlers (Cohen, Jackson, Mack, Fuller, Mitch Trubisky, center Cody Whitehair, left tackle Charles Leno Jr., and defensive tackle Akiem Hicks). The Bears also had the NFL’s Coach of the Year (Matt Nagy) and top assistant (Vic Fangio) leading the charge. It stings that the Bears didn’t take another leap in 2019. That they didn’t stands as a huge missed opportunity. But there is no denying how much fun that 2018 season was to watch — and Mitch Trubisky was a huge part of it.
