DA: “Habitual traffic offender” sentenced to years in prison

A Ukiah man described as a “dangerous traffic offender” was sentenced this week to more than five years in prison, the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office reported.

According to DA David Eyster, Patrick L. Painter Jr., 52, whom he described as “a driver who has been posing a significant threat to public safety in and around Ukiah as a habitual traffic offender,” was sentenced on Aug. 5 in Mendocino County Superior Court to 68 months, or 5.6 years, in state prison.

    Painter was in court for “sentencing on two felonies, fourteen misdemeanors, and one sentencing allegation,” and Eyster listed his arrests as follows:

    July 18, 2024: Misdemeanor Driving w/ a Forged or Altered Vehicle Registration; July 9, 2024: Felony Bail Jumping w/ felony-pending-felony sentencing enhancement; June 18, 2024: Misdemeanor DUI-related Driving on a Suspended License w/ a Prior Conviction; May 21, 2024: Feloniously and Recklessly Evading a Peace Officer (w/ pursuit speeds over 120 mph); May 21, 2024: Misdemeanor DUI-related Driving on a Suspended License w/ a Prior Conviction; May 21, 2024: Misdemeanor Driving a Motor Vehicle w/o an Ignition-Interlock; February 13, 2024: Misdemeanor DUI-related Driving on a Suspended License w/ a Prior Conviction; February 13, 2024: Misdemeanor Driving a Motor Vehicle w/o an Ignition-Interlock; February 10, 2023: Misdemeanor Driving a Motor Vehicle w/ a Blood Alcohol .15 or greater (.30%) w/ a Prior DUI Conviction; February 10, 2023: Misdemeanor Driving on a Suspended License Due to DUI, w/ a Prior Conviction; February 10, 2023: Misdemeanor Providing False Information to a Peace Officer; February 10, 2023: Misdemeanor Battery (on a 16-year-old female working at a fast-food restaurant); December 24, 2022: Misdemeanor Driving a Motor Vehicle w/ a Blood Alcohol .15 or greater (.205%) w/ a Prior DUI Conviction; December 24, 2022: Misdemeanor DUI-related Driving on a Suspended License w/ a Prior Conviction; December 24, 2022: Misdemeanor Driving a Motor Vehicle w/o an Ignition-Interlock; and December 24, 2022: Misdemeanor Resisting Arrest or Delaying a Peace Officer.

    Eyster noted that “the law enforcement agencies that interacted with the defendant and developed the evidence underlying his convictions were the Ukiah Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, and the Department of Justice forensic laboratory, (and) the attorney who prosecuted the many charges against defendant Painter was District Attorney David Eyster. Retired Mendocino County Superior Court Judge Jeanine Nadel, sitting on special assignment back in Ukiah, presided over (the) sentencing hearing, at the completion of (which), the defendant was remanded into the custody of the Sheriff to be transported to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.”
